The International Federation of Television Archives (FIAT/IFTA) is a professional association established to provide a means for co-operation amongst television archives, multimedia and audiovisual archives and libraries concerned with the collection, preservation and exploitation of moving image and recorded sound materials and associated documentation- still image and other materials.

FIAT/IFTA objectives are:

  • To provide a forum for exchange of knowledge and experience between its members.
  • To promote the study of any topic relevant to the development and use of audiovisual archives.
  • To established international standards on key issues regarding all aspects of audiovisual media archive management.
  • To promote professional standars and best practises in this field.
  • To support developing archives and to foster regional and inter-regional cooperation.
  • To heighten government, broadcasters and users awareness of the stakes and constraints related to the preservation and use of audiovisual media archives, considered as an essential source for contemporary culture and history. To achieve this, FIAT/IFTA encourages and organises local and regional meetings, as well as international conferences and seminars.

Key areas of professional concern are preservation; migration policies to the digital environment: metadata, cataloguing and documentation; media management, provision for access to archived materials; commercial exploitation of these archives; encouragement of audiovisual production based on archives; addressing of related issues such as Rights and Intellectual Property Rights.

Each year, FIAT/IFTA gives Awards for the best use of audiovisual archive material in a television programme or a multimedia product.
