Synopsis

DENIS NORDEN unveils his 11th Laughter File with a collection of brand new, never seen before spoofs, pranks and bloopers from the world of film and television. Tonight’s show includes the stars of Coronation Street as you've never seen them before, a comedy classic from Eric Sykes, Japanese ingenuity in the form of their talent show Masquerade and Geordie Duo Ant & Dec, who are left wondering 'What happens next?'

Reasons for Submission

Once again senior researcher Valerie Hetherington and her team have come up with more unseen gems from the cutting room floor. The highlight of this particular special was securing a UK first, Masquerade, from Nippon TV who's talent show featuring mime only puts our singing contests in the shade. This show also features a hard to license segment from NBC's Tonight with Jay Leno.

JURY COMMENTS

High quality and good range of clips, no unnecessary repetition or feeling that the clips were being stretched out to pad.

A loose concept which allowed a mixed bag of clips to shine. It was very entertaining.

Synopsis

The Ultimate Film was a rundown of the 100 most popular films at the British box office based on stats provided by the British Film Institute. Presented by John Cleese, the list was revealed over two 3-hour episodes on Channel 4. It was the first time the BFI had publicized this list based on British audience attendances and it made for an interesting and eclectic journey through the history of cinema in this country.

Reasons for Submission

APTN suggested we submit our programme for this category and we thought it was a good opportunity to illustrate the quality of our archive based programming. The programme is a fascinating journey through the history of cinema in this country, which also provides an insight into our social history, all done through the use of archive from a wide range of sources. North One Television, formerly Chrysalis Television has a long history of producing quality archive based Entertainment and Factual Entertainment programming, which stretches back to the original Top Tens on Channel 4. The Ultimate Film has continued that tradition and managed to gain significant coverage in the printed media and an audience share that peaked at 30% with a figure of 4.9 million viewers.

JURY COMMENTS

An amazing research and clearance job was required. Good to also see non film items such as archival interviews etc. Very entertaining and informative.

Count-down through the most profitable-ever films in the English box office is highly engaging and informative, hitting exactly the right note in respecting as well as feeding audience intelligence. Two minor drawbacks are:- (i) The highly variable quality of clips in the technical sense (Gone With the Wind, for instance, looks faded, scratched and much-duped despite now being available in a brilliant DVD restoration); and (ii) John Cleese’s cringe-making links, totally unfunny and unnecessary.

JURY COMMENTS

Excellent material was used and the production values were good. It was a bit of an exercise in reversioning previous programs and the countdown format begged comparison between them.

Although very fast-paced, this is an impeccable, indeed seamless stitching-together of most amazing moments in human, animal, marine and natural disasters. Key images of the genuinely amazing moments have been cleverly intercut with other stock footage and re-enactments, easily allowing this program to fulfil its aim to capture and entertain a broad audience.
