Synopsis

The Fight is the story of boxing, in and out of the ring, from the bare-knuckle era to the $multi-million business of today. This first programme traces the brutal origins of professional boxing and shows that, even though the rules have changed, the sport’s most popular champions have always been its most vicious fighters.

Reasons for Submission

This programme contains a wealth of archive footage dating from 1919 to 2002, putting the history of the sport of boxing in its social, cultural and political context.

Synopsis

Bradman the cricketer, the man, the myth, the hero, the icon and the legend is independently scrutinised. Thirty people from all corners of the cricketing world participated in extended TV interviews to help paint a picture of what the man was really like, his determined nature, some of the quirks of his complex personality, and offer opinions as to why he has been such an important figure in Australia's social, cultural and sporting history for the greater part of the 20th century. Far from being a sycophantic show-reel of cover drives and an exhaustive list of relentless cricket scores. Bradman: Reflections On The Legend delves into the personal nature of the man to see what made him tick - from his unparalleled powers of concentration, his extraordinary intellect and all round sporting prowess to his passion for privacy.

Reasons for Submission

During his lifetime, Sir Donald Bradman only participated in three major interviews for the electronic media - one for radio and two for television. These two TV interviews were Bradman just answering questions about his life with archive film and photographs. Bradman: Reflections On The Legend delves further, providing comprehensive analysis of the many different aspects of the Bradman legend and the phenomenon that was Bradman. The producers had to manage with a very limited amount of footage for although Sir Donald lived to the age of 92, he last played professionally in 1949 and was a recluse for much of his later life. The sparing use of archival footage and memorabilia and portrait and photographic records evoke the essence of the interviewees and provide a sense of the time they are evoking.

JUDGES COMMENTS Overly long and cricket archive footage probably already well chronicled but good mix of additional footage for illustration of his life away from cricket.

Synopsis

The BBC Paralympic Review tells the story of the Athens Games, using the most memorable images to reflect the full range of Paralympic sports and achievements.

Reasons for Submission

BBC Sport transmitted 12 x 90 minute programmes covering the 2004 Paralympic Games, including live action and combining the best archive clips with the events of the day. The Paralympic Review captured the most memorable images in a 20 minute recollection written and voiced by Eddie Butler. This was achieved working to a tight deadline using the BBC Sport Library system to access requests for specific material such as events, competitors and camera angles. BBC Sport librarians worked on-site in Athens to create the database and ensured it was up to date and capable of responding to all requests. The end result was the Paralympic Review containing all the images by which the Athens Games will be remembered for years to come.

JUDGES COMMENTS High production standards as one would expect from a BBC Sport review programme though not a unique concept. Created an uplifting reflection of the 2004 Games & demonstrated why the Paralympics & Paralympians are now held in such high esteem.
