Brief Synopsis in English

1927 – The Coalhouse Year (An archive programme about life in 1927 – made to accompany the BBC Wales reality series Coalhouse) A host of familiar faces from BBC Wales are transported back in time to report on the events of 1927. With the magic of TV, Jamie Owen presents a vintage newsreel featuring Bluebird breaking the land speed record and Cardiff City winning the FA Cup. Dressed in period costumes, the reporters were filmed as if they were actually there, watching events unfold.

Reason for submission in English

The challenge was to make a populist archive documentary with very expensive mute footage – on a small budget! So we decided to decided to bring the show alive by adding our own 1920s ‘eye witness reports’ and ‘interviews’ based on historical accounts. Film editor Keith Ware said: “Making modern video footage of the presenters and actors look like it had been shot in the 20s was quite a challenge. I spent hours adding scratches, making the picture wobble and putting it out of focus. The worse I made it look, the more the director liked it!”

Brief Synopsis in English

With access to extraordinary footage shot by emergency workers this is the epic story of the search for friends and family beneath Ground Zero. The film explores the grief of the families who lost loved ones and the heroic efforts to recover the bodies of the dead and identify them using the latest DNA techniques.

Reason for submission in English

The film attracted huge audiences and much critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. The plaudits were for telling an important yet disturbing story with great sensitivity. The archive uncovered -some of it very shocking- was also used with great restraint. The emotional impact of the film was all the greater for the respectful way the stories and archive were interwoven.

Brief Synopsis in English

After almost 50 years in power, a gravely ill Fidel Castro has handed the reins to his little known brother, Raul, and all of Cuba tenses for the reality of life after Fidel. Fidel has outlasted ten U.S. presidents and in the process dictatorially shaped this small island nation into a global force unlike any other: a Third World nation that exports soldiers, doctors, and teachers to other emerging nations. Now the struggle is at home: to withstand the inevitable onslaught of American interests and ideology After Fidel. In this documentary, former network television correspondent Michael Maclear revisits an extraordinary interview he conducted with Castro several months after he took power.

Reason for submission in English

The archival material in AFTER FIDEL brings the past to life and a enhances a personal story that spans 50 years . It draws upon interviews and footage filmed days after Castro came to power, from the archives of Castro’s personal cinematographer Roberto Chile, and never before seen material from Cuba’s Mundo Latino collection. Deftly interwoven with present day footage, the rich archival material provides the backdrop, and more importantly, the much needed presence of Fidel himself – as he was too ill to be filmed when the crew was on location last year in Cuba.

Brief Synopsis in English

Starting with D-day (1944), the First Canadian Army constituted the left wing of the Allied Forces. After passing through France and Belgium (with some fierce battles against the Germans) they end up in Holland. With its many rivers and channels, Holland is easy to defend for the Germans, hence a nightmare for the Allied Troops. Especially the province of Zeeland is difficult to attack. In 1944 and 1945 this area becomes a bloody battlefield. After the Allied Forces finally beat the Germans in Zeeland, they march to the next province Brabant. Bit by bit Holland is liberated. To the expense of many Canadian lives. But also to the great joy and happiness of the Dutch people who adore ‘their’ liberators and celebrate freedom in endless parades and parties.

Reason for submission in English

From D-day to the Dam is a special and unique project of the dutch history program ‘Changing Times’ (Andere Tijden). This documentary is fully based on footage-material. It tells the story of Canadian Soldiers liberating Europe (and Holland) during World War II. With breath-taking accuracy the Canadian Army Photo and Film Unit filmed the army during their march through France and Belgium, to end in Holland. Accompanied only by fragments of letters and diaries in the sound, the images show the soldier’s life; the sorrow and the joy, the military difficulties and victories. It is a war ‘road movie’ which keeps the viewer in a spell; with the original footage-material (and the original texts from personal documents) we are as close to the ‘real’ life as we can get.

Brief Synopsis in English

In his widely acclaimed History of Modern Britain, Andrew Marr gives an epic account of the events that have shaped our lives since the end of the Second World War. With a dynamic mixture of footage shot specially on location and archive of actual events, Marr wittily weaves together crucial turning points and telling little details to charts the evolution of Britain’s place in the world since 1945. The many strands of our national story are brought convincingly to life by the use of a wide range of archive sources woven into a gripping national saga.

Reason for submission in English

Audiences and critics were drawn to this series by an extraordinary range of archive, which complemented Andrew Marr’s compelling story-telling. Archive drawn from every decade of the post-war period enhances his solid grasp of characters and events, and often adds a new layer to our national memory bank. Each piece of personal and political gossip is brought to life by carefully selected images and sound, which attracted a huge popular audience to revisit the dramas of our recent past.

Brief Synopsis in English

This two hour special followed the journey of conflict-resolution specialist Lord Paddy Ashdown as he examined the historical, religious and political claims to “God’s City”. He threw himself into an emotionally challenging personal experience, coming face to face with the memories and the lives of ordinary Muslims and Jews as well as key players in the Six Day War story. Who owns Jerusalem is the intractable problem, at the heart of the Middle Eastern crisis. Battle for the Holy Land examined why the Holy City remains the most fought over piece of real-estate on the planet – and how , with greater understanding, we could move forward.

Reason for submission in English

The history of the city of Jerusalem is disputed. The only way in which to give evidence was to show history in the making. The archive used in the film did just that. Within days of the capture of the Western Wall, bulldozers were brought in by the Israeli army to destroy the Moroccan Quarter and make room for a plaza where thousands of Jews could and still do, go to worship. People across the globe were ignorant of this fact and some even disputed the existence of the Moroccan Quarter at all. In order to prove its existence and its destruction, CTVC searched the international archives, especially within Irael to find startling footage of the bulldozers in action.

Brief Synopsis in English

This is the untold story of the struggle to save soldiers’ lives, from the battlefield of Agincourt to the streets of Basra. Today we expect British soldiers to receive swift and expert medical attention, but for most of the past 600 years, British soldiers have instead experienced terrible neglect, suffering and needless death. It took centuries to turn this situation around. Presented by military historian Andrew Robertshaw, and co-produced with the National Army Museum, ‘Blood & Bullets’ explores one of military history’s most significant - and yet neglected -stories.

Reason for submission in English

‘Blood and Bullets’ uses archive film to illustrate a powerful, important and neglected story. The film uses footage filmed at the Western Front during the First World War to highlight the work of figures who are often in the background – Medical Officers, stretcher-bearers, ambulance-drivers. This film puts the activity of such people into context, explaining the sophistication and scale of their crucial role. The film also uses archive film of British casualty treatment and evacuation in Iraq, and footage of Royal Army Medical Corps training exercises to emphasise the growing sophistication of military medicine.

Brief Synopsis in English

The story of the revolution in love sex and marriage in Britain during the past fifty years. Episode 1 explores the dream of true love in the 1950s and 60s and the lasting impact it had from teenage years onwards. The film focuses on the love lives of five characters ranging from an ordinary housewife to Britain's most famous prostitute, who reveals that she too has always been a romantic at heart.

Reason for submission in English

The series attracted critical acclaim and large audiences- winning its slot against all competition for the three weeks of its run. Dramatic and heart rending it successfully delivered a very popular yet informative social history series for Britain's most commercial channel. The skilful interweaving of factual and feature film footage from the 50s and 60s -and the absence of any reconstruction- was well received by critics

Brief Synopsis in English

The Cold War ended and the Soviet Union was dissolved. Only then was it possible to look beyond the myth of Che Guevara and begin to search for his “ghostly” remains, gone missing for some 30 years. From 1967 (the year of Che’s execution) to 1997 (the year his body was recovered) international political events kept the remains of Ernesto Che Guevara hidden from the world, making the recovery of history’s most famous revolutionary all but impossible.

Reason for submission in English

Che Guevara's legend is as alive as ever and he became one of the most powerful icons of the 20th century. Lots of footage for this great documentary produced by B&B Production in Rome was used by focal.

Brief Synopsis in English

Massive, majestic, breathtaking—the Sydney Harbour Bridge was the greatest engineering challenge of its day anywhere on earth. Completed during the Great Depression, it is the legacy of a fateful partnership between two very different men - a brilliant engineer and a maverick politician - who shared a relentless ambition to create "the people's bridge". It not only altered the life of a city forever, it became a symbol of a bold young nation and a changing world. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of one of Australia's most loved icons, this is the epic and definitive story behind the building of the bridge and the vision of those who made it happen, despite personal conflict and political intrigue.

Reason for submission in English

"Simon Nasht, has masterfully interwoven archival footage and photographs, parliamentary debates, interviews with historians, and vividly realized factual drama to create a must see documentary for any one interested in this volatile time in Australia's development. I would highly recommend this film to historians and family historians for the wonderful insight it gives to this between-the-wars period of Australian life." Brief Synopsis in English

This film tells the story of the Cold War through the prism of its least known arena: Africa. Against colonialism, capitalism as well as communism, the newly independent nations attempted for the first time to gain real control of their own countries. Ironically, it was to Cuba’s new regime that the young African revolutionaries like Patrice Lumumba, Amilcar Cabral or Aghostino Neto turned for support in their struggle. Castro’s tiny island emerged as central player in this new strategy.

Reason for submission in English

This film tells the story of the Cold War through the prism of its least known arena: Africa. In order to relate such an untold and incredible story, Jihan El Tahri has mainly searched through Cuban and African records and found a huge amount footage. Working in collaboration with Le Chaînon Manquant, and especially Emmanuelle Dumas and Serge Garcin, she dealt with many unreleased footage, which sometimes were of very poor technical quality because they had been left unused for decades by the owners. With her cameraman, she decided to shoot the footage in HD format, and therefore contributed to upgrade the footage and help preserve this great heritage.

Brief Synopsis in English

Darfur: On Our Watch examines why it took the UN so long to respond to the obvious early warning signs of an horrific ethnic cleansing in Sudan. It documents in detail how politics, oil, guns and money trumped human rights as powerful interests on the Security Council blocked the world from acting; and how the United States, weakened by wars in Somalia and Iraq could not influence the world forum to act. CBC cameras follow actress Mia Farrow on an emotionally harrowing journey through the desolate refugee camps along the Chad/ Darfur border.

Reason for submission in English

After compiling all the footage available, much of it quite gruesome, of the killings in Darfur, the challenge was how to present it, along with distressing images of the genocides of the 1990s in a way that documented the reality without crossing the line of what was watchable to viewers at home. We sifted through hours of UN footage to chillingly show how the world’s words failed to result in meaningful action. The archival footage, most of it in SD, also had to work with the original footage which was all shot on HD.

Attacks on ships clearly marked with the Red Cross are war crimes. The sinking of such vessels in the First World War renewed hatred of the enemy. The discovery of two torpedoed hospital ships in the Bristol Channel is dredging up more than tragic memories. Brief Synopsis in English

Diana, Princess of Wales was perhaps the most photographed person in the world. Her death in a car crash in August 1997 stunned the world. The blame was put squarely on the photographers who surrounded her in death as well as in life. For ten years conspiracy theories, claims and counter-claims obscured what actually happened that night. The photographers witnessed and recorded one of the most terrible and iconic moments of the 20th century. But for ten years that night and the photographs they took has plagued their lives. This was the first time the story of the photographers arrested that night was told.

Reason for submission in English

This film uses some of the photographs that were taken by passers-by as well as professionals and help to establish what went on in the tunnel that night. Some had not been seen on television before. The programme set the national news agenda for nearly two weeks in June for its inclusion of some of these images. No other programme featuring archive content made such a splash this year. It pulled in a prime time audience of more than 4 million, the biggest audience for a specialist factual programme on Channel 4 this year.

Brief Synopsis in English

On January 8th January 1979 an oil tanker, the “Betelgeuse”, exploded at Gulf Oil’s Whiddy Terminal, Bantry Bay. The explosion was of such magnitude that it was heard as far away as Kenmare. The resulting inferno killed 50 people, and created a major environmental disaster. RTÉ’s Archive Production Unit tells this big story, setting the context with news and documentary archive, then brings it down to the personal stories of some of those caught up in the events of that night.

Reason for submission in English

Archive used imaginatively within a TV format. DISASTERS is one of several formatted RTE TV documentary series' from their TV Archive Unit. Its raison d’etre is to use archive footage to tell ratings winning local Irish stories in formatted television programming.

Brief Synopsis in English

Coca Cola is one of the most iconic brands of both the 20th and 21st centuries. Promoting itself as the drink of freedom, choice and US patriotism, the company’s feel-good factor is recognised worldwide and reflected in its enormous profits. But behind this carefully crafted image exists a company accused of environmental damage, human rights violations and questionable business practices. Political activist and journalist Mark Thomas travels to South America, India and the US to investigate the way in which Coca Cola operates and the extent to which it upholds its moral and ethical obligations. Thomas, a long-term critic of Coca Cola’s more controversial practices, finds disturbing evidence which undermines its effervescent image as a force for good and examines the global consumer backlash which is having a very real impact on the company’s reputation and value.

Brief Synopsis in English

In the 1930's, nineteen year-old Dan Leahy and his brother became the first white men to walk into the Highlands of Papua New Guinea. Their arrival in search of gold brought cataclysmic change. Before long, the Leahy's gold mine had become the centre of a new outpost in the Australian colony. But unlike other colonists, Dan Leahy openly embraced local custom. Oblivious to scandal, he raised a family of ten children from three village wives. Today, thirty years after Australia gave Papua New Guinea its independence, his descendants still call the Highlands their home. This is the story of a unique colonial legacy and a family which must still bridge the divide between two very different worlds.

Reason for submission in English

The footage sourced for this documentary is extremely rare. It perpetuates the rigors of colonial life in Papua New Guinea, its pitfalls and high adventure. The majority of the film used by the producers had never been segmented in a contemporary documentary, which has resulted in a reinvigoration of interest in this particular era of Australian colonial history, especially from an anthropological viewpoint. Although some of the film had deteriorated in vaults over the decades since it had been shot, Preservation work was carried out on the telecine facility here in ABC Archives & Libraries, during which the technical operator performed all necessary improvements and corrections, prior to it being dubbed to digital tape.

Brief Synopsis in English

The second part of the series which chronicles the banker and philanthropist Albert Kahn's attempts to document the world in film and photographs at the beginning of the 20th Century, ‘Men of the World’ tells the story of two of the most ambitious of all the early journeys undertaken by Kahn’s project - the circumnavigation of the globe by Kahn and his photographer-cum-chauffeur Alfred Dutertre in 1908-9 (in which they visited The United States, Japan, and China) and an epic 1913 trip by one of Kahn’s most intrepid cinematographers, Stéphane Passet, who journeyed to China, Mongolia and India.

Reason for submission in English

We believe that this film used rarely-seen pre-documentary footage from the Albert Kahn Museum in Paris to great effect, giving today's viewers a vivid insight into life all over the world almost 100 years ago.

Brief Synopsis in English

The 1916 Rising in Dublin was a glorious failure; this drama documentary argues that lessons learned in Frongoch prison camp in Wales led to the creation of a new Irish state five years later. This is where most of the rebels were interned, including Michael Collins, one of the architects of Irish independence. This crucial yet neglected episode in Irish history is told in their own words, as recorded in their letters of the time. Through them we see the prisoners’ struggles with the camp authorities over prisoner of war status, and their propaganda campaign to shame the British government.

Reason for submission in English

This documentary makes effective use of period footage to convey the aftermath of the Easter Rising and life in a First World War POW camp

Brief Synopsis in English

They both had leading roles on the stage of world history – the “Führer” and the “Duce”. Two men who rose on desire to restore their respective countries to ancient glory instead drag them into the abyss alongside themselves. “Hitler and Mussolini” is a historical epic with numerous archive materials mixed with original settings, places of triumph and defeat, with landscapes that have become part of history, told in opulent images and impressions.

Reason for submission in English

The film is a masterpiece of a mixture of old and new images. Archives material transferred on HD and combined with HD shot images of the places where Hitler and Mussolini met.

Brief Synopsis in English

The hitherto untold story of Prince Charles Edward, Queen Victoria's youngest grandson born and brought up in the UK who was sent to Germany in 1900 to take up the vacant Duchy of Coburg and whose life was ruined by this decision and his own weakness. He fought for Germany in both world wars and died in 1954 having been stripped of all his British titles, branded a traitor peer and tried and convicted as an 'Important Nazi'. While his life unraveled in a way no-one could have foreseen his sister, Princess Alice led an exemplary British Royal life and was the living embodiment of the life he could have led

Reason for submission in English

We had to tell a story with an almost 'invisible' main character. We denied access to the family archive and thus had to trawl archives and sources here, in the US, Germany, France and Italy as well as contacting private collections for permission to use their stills. After effecting the stills to make more of them and create layers brought out a depth of emotion that would otherwise have been missed. Moving contemporary footage in the UK and Germany was a place specific rather than generic and this added great authenticity to the storytelling.

Brief Synopsis in English

As Tony Blair finally steps down, award winning reporter Michael Cockerell tells the bitter-sweet story of how Prime Ministers cope with life after Number Ten. This how-to-do it guide draws the lessons from Winston Churchill to today. The film reveals the perils and pitfalls of your new role: how to make money and keep your dignity; and how to cope with losing the most addictive political drug of all - power.

Reason for submission in English

Through rare archive - together with home movies and untransmitted material - the film tells the tragic-comic story of life after Number Ten. The archive shows Churchill sunning himself like an ancient tortoise in the South of France, Harold Wilson’s sub-prime attempts at hosting a chat show and Lady Thatcher dazed and confused by an ordinary shopping trip to Sainsbury’s. It took extensive research to locate the material, as ex-Premiers tend to fade from the camera’s view. One highlight unearthed was a remarkable gathering of five former premiers –from Ted Heath to Tony Blair which began and ended the film.

Brief Synopsis in English

The video game revolution has been under way for decades, progressing from simple amusements created in the 1950s to an all-pervasive force in today's popular culture that rivals — and will perhaps soon surpass — film and television. What began as a subculture pastime has evolved and transcended genres to become a unique form of expression impacting everything from modern warfare to interpersonal relationships. Rise of the Video Game is a comprehensive and progressive exploration of the past, present and future of video games and video gamers. From the early days of Pong to today's ever-popular Halo 2, and from Atari 2600 to Nintendo to PlayStation, Rise of the Video Game tells the story of the people, the ideologies and the technology behind video games and how they have exploded into a cultural phenomenon.

Reason for submission in English

The evolution of gaming has seen the pendulum move from the days of games replicating society, to society replicating games. Featuring interviews with giants in the gaming industry of yesterday and today, this five-part series examines the evolution of the video game and its cultural impact on the world of entertainment today. The documentary series showcases a range of archival material, from news footage to gaming footage that has been archived by collectors all over the world. We believe it is a world-class example of using archival material to present a unique history.

Brief Synopsis in English

It was a strange affair, full of love, lust and despair... That of Adolf Hitler and Eva Braun, his mistress from 1932 to their double suicide in Hitler’s Berlin bunker, that fateful day in April 1945. For the first time, this extraordinary film shows Hitler in his private life, as seen through the eyes of Eva Braun, who - with her own 16mm camera - recorded a kind of “making-of” (in color!) about Hitler and his regime. A unique look at the private life and public crimes of the German dictator.

Reason for submission in English

This 70-minute program, also composed entirely of archives (films and photographs), was broadcast in TF1’s evening second time slot (2.4 million viewers) and has already been purchased for re-broadcast in ten countries. Our team of directors and historians took about one year to analyze, decipher, and extract film clips from four hours of footage taken by Eva Braun. Thanks to tight editing, careful restoration, and research in supplementary archives, the production achieved a film which simultaneously communicates with the general public as well history enthusiasts.

Brief Synopsis in English

In 1958, one of Britain’s long standing aristocratic ceremonies came to an end. The last debutantes were formally presented to the Queen before being launched on the “Season”. This documentary tells the story of a group of women profoundly shaped by it. Through their eyes, we’re introduced to a world of class eccentricity in its dying days. We see how the lives of the last debutantes developed during the ensuing years of profound social change. Some would question the value system for which they’d been groomed, some would dramatically reject it whilst others found their lives heading in fascinating directions.

Reason for submission in English

The central event of the film - the last presentation of debutantes to the Queen in 1958 - was neither filmed nor photographed in accordance with court protocol. In its absence, the film cleverly uses archive of debutantes from different eras and the one presentation ceremony that was filmed with George V1 after the war, to illustrate the mystical symbolism of the debutante tradition. Veracity is provided by judicious use of the limited archive of that last Season and use of intimate stills from the archive of society photographer - Barry Swaebe - so that the missing footage doesn't ever diminish the evocation of the era.

Brief Synopsis in English

In 1929, in the face of collapsing demand for coal, mine owners in the Northern Coalfields of NSW, announced that they would reduce miners’ wages and strip them of their hard won industrial rights. When their union, refused to agree to these terms the mine owners locked the gates. They were to remain closed for 15 months. 10,000 miners, pit boys and their families now found themselves without a job, forced to subsist on government handouts and charity. What began as an undeclared war on industrial labour ended up overpowering a government, crippling an industry and besieging a community.

Reason for submission in English

Research on Lockout, revealed that an ABC TV (Aust) documentary team (prod Bill Stellar), interviewed six Lockout veterans in 1985. Submitted as a pilot programme, it was never broadcast. Shot on 16mm (4:3 aspect), the rare footage, minus production notes, was re-discovered by ABC librarian Laila Elmoos following our inquiries. It proved integral to our documentary. Our director and his team used innovative techniques to seamless integrate these rare interviews, plus footage from Film Australia’s Story of a City 1947) and the Waterside Workers Film Unit’s, Hewers of Coal (1957), into Lockout.

Brief Synopsis in English

The film strives to encapsulate the amazing life of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, a man of peace whose life bears testimony that while violent victories can only be transitory, non-violence as an invisible force works its miracles silently registering conquests that are enduring. Carefully assembled images and words not only trace out the story of Gandhi’s life from obscure beginnings to entry into a pantheon of leaders of mankind-statesman, seers and prophetic pioneers who belong to the common heritage of mankind and are eternal. The narrative focuses on the making of the Mahatma – a great soul. Individuals and ideas that shaped his mind at home and during the years of study in England and stay in South Africa are reviewed evocatively. The running thread throughout in Gandhi’s thoughts, speech and action is non-violence

Brief Synopsis in English

"Micas and Salazar" is a documentary about António de Oliveira Salazar, the dictator who ruled Portugal for almost 50 years. Based on the memories of his goddaughter, this work reveals the man's secluded side. Maria da Conceição, was 6 years old when she went to live at Salazar's house. During more than three decades, the man who was President of the Council to everyone else was like a father to her, who tucked her in bed every night. Only half a life later and already at the age of 77 does Micas, as she used to be called by the “Doctor”, summon the courage to put on paper the memories of a life spent with one of the most striking personalities of the Portuguese 20th century. A harsh man, to many a dictator, who will always remain to Micas as a caring and paternal Salazar.

Reason for submission in English

The documentary “Micas and Salazar” unveils a little known side of Salazar, a more private and secret one. The Portuguese dictator, who ruled the country for more than 30 years, left an aura of tyranny and repression that no longer faded away. We deeply believe that this work accomplished the duty of journalism of showing another side of the story. To tell it, a deep research of archive footage on Salazar and Portugal during that period, had to be carried out. In spite of documentaries not being a usual product on Portuguese prime time, this documentary was broadcasted at 9 p.m. and obtained an 11.9% rating and a 28% share.

Brief Synopsis in English

This programme uses film archive and interviews to tell the story of the difficult birth of BBC Local Radio in 1967. Film was used as a means of persuading politicians - and the BBC - to back the project, and the new stations were filmed by the BBC as well as film-makers from independent television. It was a new kind of broadcasting in the UK, and its launch was full of chaos as well as excitement.

Reason for submission in English

Surprisingly, for a programme about radio, there is a wealth of archive displaying different viewpoints - film-makers in the traditional BBC were suspicious, amateur film-makers were enthusiastic, and commercial film-makers were interested in local radio as a business opportunity.

1921. In Russia a million children are without parents after six years of war, famine and disease. 300,000 of them have been orphaned by murderous anti Semitic attacks, their lives hanging by a thread. Filmed in the original locations, together with unique archive footage and testimony from survivors, “Ochberg’s Orphans” reveals this unknown story of heroism. Today, in a century dominated by wars, genocides and displaced peoples, Ochberg’s legacy is a reminder that a small act can make a big difference.

The Church of Scientology is big in star-struck LA and it's getting bigger here in the UK, too. But it still can’t shake off accusations that it’s less of a religion and more of a cult. Panorama sent reporter John Sweeney to investigate. He was shouted at, spied on, visited in his hotel at midnight, chased around LA by sinister strangers and had one interview interrupted when a top Scientologist arrived to denounce the interviewee on camera. And after a week of filming, Sweeney loses his cool in a vigorous exchange with one of the Church minders.

Reason for submission in English

The aim of the film was to test the Church’s claim that they’ve become a mainstream religion. Critics say that Scientology harasses opponents mercilessly by spying on them, intimidating them and using a mind control technique called 'bull-baiting' to put adversaries at a psychological disadvantage. Reporter John Sweeney’s mission was to investigate whether Scientology had cleaned up its act and left these tactics behind. But he quickly became the subject of their intense investigation. This is the first film to show exactly how the Church attacks its perceived enemies – in this case, John Sweeney himself.

Brief Synopsis in English

Today, celebrity culture dominates our daily media and social dialogue. Celebrity is a 24-hour business, fed by nightly entertainment news programs, cable channels devoted to celebrity, the bustling newsstand business of magazines and the millions of web sites that keep vigil, ever-hopeful of sellable scandal. To truly get at this world the documentary begins and ends with Paris…Hilton that is. Famous for doing nothing, she is the ultimate manifestation of our obsession with celebrity culture and the massive profits that it wields. As long as we are willing to watch and read, who can resist feeding our habit?

Reason for submission in English

The challenge with the Paris Hilton material was primarily the sheer volume of footage and photographs to work with – over 60,000 images from one photographer alone. Because the major networks didn’t have a lot of footage, a lot of the stocks came from non-traditional sources such as private collectors, crazed fans, new media and celebrity paparazzi. With limited interview access to one of the most photographed women in the world, the documentary successfully presents the stock footage in a way that is fresh, thought-provoking and entertaining.

Brief Synopsis in English

JOHN PAUL II: A SAINT FOR OUR TIMES, examines the life of Pope John Paul II in the context of the process of his beatification which is taking place in the Vatican at this time. This process is expected to be finalized this year resulting in the beatification of John Paul II-- the first step to full canonization. The documentary is set in three parts which examine the life of the deceased pontiff beginning with his "baptism by fire" in war torn Poland during World War II and continuing with his struggle for religious freedom in Communist Poland during the second half of the 20th Century. The second part, looks at the effect John Paul the Second had on the fall of Communism in Poland after his accession to the Papacy and the influence he had in causing totalitarian regimes of right and left ideologies to fall around the world as he traveled the world, spreading his message in support of human dignity, religious freedom and human rights.

Brief Synopsis in English

On the 25th anniversary of the first diagnosis of AIDS in Australia comes the little known story of how Sydney’s poofters, junkies and whores stopped the virus in its tracks. Along with politicians, doctors and nuns, they pulled off a high risk strategy that broke the law, offended everyone and saved tens of thousands of lives. Sydney was one of the first places in the world to stop the virus, and the WHO still talks about the Australian Model for preventing AIDS. This is their story, told by them: how luck, guts and sheer bloody pragmatism might yet save the world from AIDS.

Reason for submission in English

RAMPANT: HOW A CITY STOPPED A PLAGUE The power of this documentary really rested on bringing an earlier era to life. We could only convey just how huge an achievement our unlikely coalition of "poofters, junkies, whores", politicians, doctors and nuns had pulled off in stopping the spread of the virus if we could take the viewers back inside the mindset of the times – a different era, when gays had only just come out of the closet, when sex workers and drug users were seen with viewed with undisguised contempt, when nothing was known about AIDS, and there was such terrible panic around it. After 25 years of living with AIDS it is hard to recall the real fear and loathing that marked its early years, when so little was known about how it spread and, (while treatments were so primitive) its effects were so merciless. There's nothing quite like the real thing in terms of seeing the hysteria and agony of the time. Archive Researcher, Carolyn Saul was relentless in her search for images that conveyed not just the literal meaning of those ideas, but carried the details and touch that bring the era truly to life.

Brief Synopsis in English

Meticulously researched and compiled, the Producers of ‘Returning The Ring’ unearthed stunning film, documentary, pictorial, and audio archive that brings clarity to the production and generates a powerful and creative dynamic that informs and engages viewers. During WW2 a USAF B-17 bomber crashed into a mountain overlooking Belfast, killing all ten crewmembers. Incredibly, fifty years later at the remote crash-site, a man stumbled across a wedding ring belonging to one of the crew. He dedicated nearly three years (pre-internet) to finding the family of the crewman and returning the ring.

Brief Synopsis in English

Although “shorn women” are a significant image of the Liberation, few studies have analysed this issue. This practice was common and widespread on French territory in 1944-1945. The description of “public shavings” reflects how unclear the lines were during this period between public and private life. Symbolically the act of shaving represented the ”sin” - collaboration,  the “punishment” - purification, and finally a ”vision of the future”  - the reconstruction. The director tried to understand why these episodes occurred, and how they represent in a way the reappropriation of ‘tondue’’s bodies specifically, and of women's bodies, in  general.

Reason for submission in English

We heard about the Focal International Awards 2008 by the European Documentary Network (EDN). Jean- Pierre Carlon's last documentary, "Shorn in 1944", was just completed and we thought it was a great idea to make it participate in this event. We think that if this film is local, the subject of it is international, because women are always the first victims during wars and conflicts.

Brief Synopsis in English

Newly married in a hungry Andalusia, Diego and Maria were celebrating the birth of their daughter when the Coup of the 18th July, 1936, came about, throwing Spain into chaos. This new order that the general Franco tried to impose brought about a long separation; Diego had joined the Republicans; when the Fascists won, he had to flee to France, leaving his wife and daughter. In the meantime, the conflict was spreading to every part of Europe. Interestingly, events from their lives fit in with history; it is also the story of a couple of 20-year olds in 1935.

Brief Synopsis in English

Tammuz To Blow Up The Bomb On the morning of June 7th, 1981, eight Israeli pilots set out on a suicide mission targeted at the Iraqi nuclear reactor named Tammuz. Their objective was to suppress the nuclear threat posed by Iraq on Israel’s very existence. In terms of distance and target, it was the most complex mission ever undertaking by the Israeli Air Force and the route passed over enemy territory such as the states of Jordan and Saudi Arabia. Later, it was said that while sailing on the Red Sea, Hussein King of Jordan saw the airplanes flying over his yacht, but made no effort to inform Saddam Hussein of the approaching attack. It took just one minute and twenty seconds to completely destroy the nuclear reactor. Seven of the eight pilots are still alive. The late Ilan Ramon, the first Israeli astronaut to fly in space was killed when the Columbia Space Shuttle disintegrated during its descent back to Earth. The remaining seven include one who was subsequently involved in the Jonathan Pollard affair and another who was one of the most famous signatories to the letter of protest against Israel’s policies in the occupied territories. The pilots describe the long, tense hours flying towards the target, the details of which they learned only a few hours before takeoff. Israel’s elite pilots were on a mission that would change the face of the Middle East, through a mission that provoked across the board protest from every corner of the globe, including from the USA, which 10 years later itself went to war against the Iraqi nuclear threat. The film also puts into perspective, today’s decision-making process at the political and military (Israeli Air forces) levels and presents possible answers to another question: Will Israel respond to the threat from Iran in the same way in which it dealt with the Iraqi threat in 1981?

Reason for submission in English

Documentary filmmaking is still burdened with public and social responsibility, and Israeli documentary filmmakers on the whole can be characterized as having a very high level of social and political sensitivity. In many cases, they are the ones that place certain subjects on the public agenda, ones that the large broadcasting organizations refrain from dealing with for fear of embarrassing, boring or angering their audience. Only once we understand that a war continues long after the last bullet is shot - it remains in people's soul, The cinematic medium could be a hilling and educational and help in bringing peace for the middle east

Blair at War is the second programme in the three part BBC1 series, The Blair Years. In it Tony Blair and George W Bush, who took their nations to war in Iraq, talk as never before about the decision to topple Saddam Hussein. The programme intercuts interviews with key participants together with archive footage to reveal what was going on behind the scenes as the international coalition fell apart. Major figures like Britain’s ambassador to the UN, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, talk frankly about their actions – reported at the time in the news – and the truth of what was really going on.

Brief Synopsis in English

The Diana Years was a series of three 1-hour programmes commissioned to mark the tenth anniversary of her death. It was conceived entirely as an archive series, re-visiting Princess Diana’s story through library footage. The footage was accompanied by music of the relevant periods, taken from her own personal collection or associated with her. Episode Two dealt with the years from 1985 to 1992, beginning with the increasing estrangement between her and her husband, and culminating in the announcement of their separation.

Reason for submission in English

This critically-acclaimed series aimed to give renewed emphasis to the power and importance of archive footage as a central form in the telling of contemporary history on television. It required a high degree of editorial and editing skill to distil and integrate more than 25 hours of rushes. We tried – unusually these days -- to allow the footage to breathe and to be played at length. We also aimed to complement and enhance the footage with carefully chosen music, and by interviews with many of those present when the footage was originally shot.

Brief Synopsis in English

In 1939 there were more than 3 million Jews in Poland. Just two families are known to have survived the Holocaust intact. This is the story of one of them - a husband, his wife and their two little girls. Separated, threatened, persecuted, and facing genocide, through an astonishing sequence of events, they each survived. With courage, daring, guile, sheer bloody-mindedness – and luck, they came to be united once more as a family against all odds – only to separate again as an Iron Curtain fell across their continent.

Reason for submission in English

This programme again demonstrates the power of archive footage as a central component in the re-telling of history. We feel this programme made imaginative and creative use of the relatively small amount of original material available. Two immediate challenges were to use general footage to tell a personal story, and to weave many disparate sources together into a seamless whole. We then amplified and enriched the footage by the use of still photographs and music. And by mixing between the original footage and our own modern footage of the same locations today, we tried to add impact and poignancy.

Brief Synopsis in English

Joseph Kittinger Jr. and his colleague David Simons were the first human beings in space. In the late 1950s they soared for hours above the atmosphere of our planet and plunged with unimaginable speed through the clouds. Years before the astronauts conquered space with the help of rockets, Kittinger and Simons took the first, potentially fatal steps. Their lives quite literally depended on a thin sheet of plastic – because that was what the huge balloons that carried them into such high altitudes were made of.

Brief Synopsis in English

To coincide with the 60th anniversary of Indian Independence, this three part documentary series takes us on a journey behind the scenes of what was known as the greatest show on earth: British India under the Raj. The first episode recreates a lost era in the 1930s, when British expatriates attempted to create an idyllic version of English life in India. Using remarkable home movies (including the rediscovered family films of Mark Tully, former BBC Delhi correspondent) a lost way of life is recreated. A world in which families had a retinue of servants, rode into the jungle on elephants, and floated down rivers on inflated buffalo skins. We travel across India and Pakistan to explore the home and family life of the British Raj: we hear from one of the last surviving punkah wallahs who worked the fans for an English household in British India, and we bring back a couple, now in their late 80s, who were married in Lahore, whose first child was born in Rawalpindi and who have not been back since 1947.

Reason for submission in English

The Lost World of The Raj was a unique series in that it looked at the lives of the British in India through previously undiscovered rare home movie footage. The production team traced many of those featured in the footage and told their stories and unique perspective of life during the last 25 years. The executive producer discovered a large amount of film archive in the basements of the Empire and Commonwealth museum in Bristol. Following this discovery the team set about a search for other sources of home archive along with contributors who featured in them. A nine production schedule led to the completion of 3 prime-time films on BBC 2 themed around the British and Indian experience of work, home and play during the last 25 years of the Raj.

Brief Synopsis in English

The untold story of the IRA’s renewed war against Britain in the 1950’s. Through the words of former IRA activists and archive footage drawn from un-broadcast private collections, the documentary charts the evolution of Irish Republicanism before the Northern ‘Troubles’ Combining a strong narrative and exclusive interviews with eye-witnesses and those who participated at first hand, the documentary offers a fascinating inside account of the bloody events of the six year border campaign. Encompassing subterfuge, counter-intelligence, gun-running and daring raids the IRA eventually became weakened by divisions within the ranks. The guerilla war eventually fizzled out due to lack of public support and a crackdown on the organization by Eamon de Valera and Charlie Haughey. However the IRA remained intact and seven years later a new war began which dispensed with the idealism of the 1950s and was far more ruthless.

Brief Synopsis in English

Veteran presenter from the heyday of BBC current affairs Cliff Michelmore returns to our screens to introduce an evening of archive programmes and specially filmed interviews with the politicians, civil servants and commentators involved in the 1967 devaluation of the Pound. Archive programmes include: Twenty-Four Hours with Cliff Michelmore; The Money Programme with William Davis and Alan Watson; the ‘grand inquisitor’ Robin Day in the Our Money special containing Harold Wilson’s infamous “pound in your pocket” address; Panorama with an appearance by a young David Dimbleby; highlights from Budget ’68 - Ian Trethowan and the team examine Roy Jenkins’ deflationary budget live as the Chancellor removed £923 million from the economy.

Reason for submission in English

We wanted to look at a moment in political history. The value of using archive at this length is that it opens up to view the changing techniques of television, interviews and politicians. The programmes tell us about ourselves and the changing nature of British society. Among the few women to appear are City secretaries, filmed knitting. Stephen Pile, The Telegraph, said: “It was like entering a parallel universe, still black and white, full of long-dead politicians forever exercised by terrible problems now solved. Above all, these Britons were similar to us, but significantly different”.

Brief Synopsis in English

A pawn in the KGB system, Vladimir Putin patiently, and invisibly played all the rules of the game to reach the throne of power, never forgetting his allegiance to the KGB. Since 2000, the Kremlin’s grand arbitrator, has unscrupulously orchestrated a new system : a psychological gulag where “tsar” TV has doped the people, massacre in Chechnya, in the name of Russian sovereignty. quasi abolition of a free press, crushing of political opposition, “privatization of the state” by government oligarchs, cynical assassination of state “enemies”. Opponents to Putin’s system are the enemy within, the American “wolf”, the enemy without. Oil and gas are his system’s weapons and economic trump card, his empire and his challenge to the world….

Reason for submission in English

This film is the result of 3 years of research and reflection on a system which we all acknowledge today. The use of library footage has been made to investigate both the visual and factual elements which illustrate our thesis. The juxtaposition and edit of these different archives, some of which have never been used before, are an essential part of the story line and analysis of our major character and essential in the construction of the puzzle which reveals a system and a means to an end.

The invading Japanese military pillaged, burnt and massacred more than 100,000 Chinese civilians and soldiers between December 1937 and February 1938. Our documentary “investigates” Japan’s history in an attempt to shed light on the deep-rooted causes of such barbarity. A moment of sheer madness? Orders from the military hierarchy? 70 years on, it’s time to comprehend. And it will be the testimonies of the last surviving Japanese veterans – set against the memories of surviving Chinese witnesses – that offer the most credible explanation.

Brief Synopsis in English

This critically acclaimed series pays evocative homage to Britain’s Motorways - to the people who built them, the people who use them, and the people who risked their lives to stop them. Along the way it relives everything from early driving experiences and the joys of motorway services to tales of the epic construction process and the rise of the protest movement. This second episode deftly interweaves archive and specially shot footage to explore the Technicolor world of prosperity and freedom that motorways promised and the wonderful, and weird, destinations that they took us to – from Terence Conran designed service station restaurants, to ‘orbital’ raves, to shopping centres complete with the infrastructure of a small town… Throughout the series the telling use of archive allows the hopes and dreams of post war Britain to be explored through this cornerstone of modern Britain - the motorway.

Brief Synopsis in English

TV advertising used to be such an easy business. They played the ads, we watched the ads. But along came hundreds of new channels, and Tivo, and the internet, and audiences scattered. The Selling Game is all about how marketers not only survived the so-called Panic on Madison Avenue, but rang in a new gilded age of advertising. Digital media, the Internet and cable TV, have handed marketers incredibly powerful new keys to our hearts and minds, and wallets. Give us an hour of attention, and we'll see that you never look at ads the same way again.

Reason for submission in English

The documentary is a story of corporate messages and the challenge was in acquiring and using meticulously guarded material. In a dance around control over the footage, The Selling Game carefully stays on the side of journalism - commenting on the commercial footage without becoming another medium for its messages. This documentary’s footage also points to a new direction and vital source for visual researchers: the Internet. Much of the material, for example, consumer-generated ads, was only available online, and finding/crediting the author takes on other challenges.

Brief Synopsis in English

The War, a seven-part series directed and produced by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick, tells the story of the Second World War through the personal accounts of a handful of men and women from four quintessentially American towns. The series explores the most intimate human dimensions of the greatest cataclysm in history — a worldwide catastrophe that touched the lives of every family on every street in every town in America — and demonstrates that in extraordinary times, there are no ordinary lives. Six years in the making, “The War” is the first full retelling of the struggle in more than a generation. In addition to the moving commentary from veterans, it features never-before-seen footage, raw photographs, and the voices of Tom Hanks, Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Lucas, Adam Arkin—among others—who read the newspaper reports, letters, diaries, and journals of those who have not survived to the present. The series also features perhaps the most realistic sound effects ever used for a documentary, which gives a terrifying immediacy to the battle scenes.

She soon found herself in Ealing police station, a pawn in international negotiations along with the men, women and children on the captured airplanes. With interviews from hostages and their hijackers Timewatch goes back to the month when airplane travel changed forever.

Reason for submission in English

Reason for submission – Timewatch - Hijack The hijack of five planes in September 1970 by the guerrilla group the PFLP was masterminded to bring the Palestinian cause to the world’s attention through the growing news media. The hijackers even held press conferences on the desert runway in front of the world’s press pack. The result is extraordinary archive record of the events of September 1970 and the subsequent civil war in Jordan. Hijack also contains archive film setting out the background to the Palestinian struggle and the conflict with Israel, aviation and security footage from the period, and reactions from around the world to the hostage-taking. Many of the interviewees in the programme were discovered in the archive record. Hijack is not only a story that relies on archive to tell it, but is in itself an account of the power of the moving image for political ends. After all, who can forget the iconic image of those three hijacked planes being blown up in the Jordanian desert?

Brief Synopsis in English

Three unrelated events - a black heavyweight champion without a challenger, a civil war and a journeyman Irish fighter down on his luck - conspire to produce the most bizarre world championship fight in boxing history, on St. Patrick's Day 1923 in Dublin city. The newly founded Free State government, the new light weight champion of the world, Battling Siki from Senegael and Mike McTigue, a Clare born Irish fighter returning from New York all needed each other. The politicians needed legitimacy, Siki needed money and McTigue needed a fight. A syndicate of horse racing brought them all together. And so it was that the world's sporting press descended on a civil war zone on March 17 1923.

Brief Synopsis in English

“Under the Fascist Yoke” covers the conspiracy between extreme right-wing parties and the generals to overthrow the Spanish Republic by force. The documentary sheds new light on the uneasy, shifting alliance between Falangists, Carlists, and Alfonsists in their ruthless quest for power, revealing from where they drew their support and the depth of their roots in Catalonia. The extent to which the Falange and the National- Socialist movement (JONS) collaborated to undermine the Republic is also explored, as is Falangist complicity in the post-war repression.

Reason for submission in English

“Under the Fascist Yoke” is the fascinating saga of Fascism in Catalonia between 1922 and 1942. It not only reveals the dark forces ranged against the Republic, but is also timely in that it features the live testimony of some of the conspirators, all of whom are well into their twilight years.

Brief Synopsis in English

The love story of Hannelore Cahn (83, living in Brooklyn) and her great love Rob de Vries, the Jewish actor and resistance hero who freed her spectacularly from the Westerbork transit camp in WW2. A week after her escape she chose to return to the camp with Hans Eisinger of the Jewish camp police. A decision that still haunts her. Hannelore was one of the Westerbork Girls, the chorus line of the camp revue. Singing and dancing seemed to protect her from deportation to Auschwitz. She still wonders why she returned to the camp and never forgot her ‘Big love’.

Brief Synopsis in English

In October 1957, Britain suffered its worst nuclear accident. Fire began to spread throughout the core of the Windscale nuclear reactor, sending radioactive dust across Britain. Using rare footage and tape recordings of the inquiry into the fire - kept secret for 50 years and now heard for the first time - and interviews with the men who risked their lives to prevent a nuclear tragedy, the film shows how political ambition fuelled the fire, how Prime Minister Macmillan, desperate not to undermine Britain's relationship with the US, covered up the truth and made scapegoats of the heroes of Windscale.

Reason for submission in English

An imaginative mix of colour and B&W footage, original recordings from the Windscale enquiry and interviews with the people on the ground tell the gripping story of the Windscale fire. Clips from the COI film “Operation Hurricane”, the story of Britain’s first atomic bomb test in 1952, features rare footage of Sir William Penny, Director of the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment. “Atomic Achievement”, filmed in Eastman colour, is an account from 1956 of Britain's nuclear power programme. Colour footage of Windscale a year before the fire captures the excitement and "spin" that surrounded the nuclear programme at the time.
