Brief Synopsis in English |
1927 – The Coalhouse Year (An archive programme about life in 1927 – made to accompany the BBC Wales reality series Coalhouse) A host of familiar faces from BBC Wales are transported back in time to report on the events of 1927. With the magic of TV, Jamie Owen presents a vintage newsreel featuring Bluebird breaking the land speed record and Cardiff City winning the FA Cup. Dressed in period costumes, the reporters were filmed as if they were actually there, watching events unfold. |
Reason for submission in English |
The challenge was to make a populist archive documentary with very expensive mute footage – on a small budget! So we decided to decided to bring the show alive by adding our own 1920s ‘eye witness reports’ and ‘interviews’ based on historical accounts. Film editor Keith Ware said: “Making modern video footage of the presenters and actors look like it had been shot in the 20s was quite a challenge. I spent hours adding scratches, making the picture wobble and putting it out of focus. The worse I made it look, the more the director liked it!” |

Brief Synopsis in English |
With access to extraordinary footage shot by emergency workers this is the epic story of the search for friends and family beneath Ground Zero. The film explores the grief of the families who lost loved ones and the heroic efforts to recover the bodies of the dead and identify them using the latest DNA techniques. |
Reason for submission in English |
The film attracted huge audiences and much critical acclaim on both sides of the Atlantic. The plaudits were for telling an important yet disturbing story with great sensitivity. The archive uncovered -some of it very shocking- was also used with great restraint. The emotional impact of the film was all the greater for the respectful way the stories and archive were interwoven. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
After almost 50 years in power, a gravely ill Fidel Castro has handed the reins to his little known brother, Raul, and all of Cuba tenses for the reality of life after Fidel. Fidel has outlasted ten U.S. presidents and in the process dictatorially shaped this small island nation into a global force unlike any other: a Third World nation that exports soldiers, doctors, and teachers to other emerging nations. Now the struggle is at home: to withstand the inevitable onslaught of American interests and ideology After Fidel. In this documentary, former network television correspondent Michael Maclear revisits an extraordinary interview he conducted with Castro several months after he took power. |
Reason for submission in English |
The archival material in AFTER FIDEL brings the past to life and a enhances a personal story that spans 50 years . It draws upon interviews and footage filmed days after Castro came to power, from the archives of Castro’s personal cinematographer Roberto Chile, and never before seen material from Cuba’s Mundo Latino collection. Deftly interwoven with present day footage, the rich archival material provides the backdrop, and more importantly, the much needed presence of Fidel himself – as he was too ill to be filmed when the crew was on location last year in Cuba. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
Starting with D-day (1944), the First Canadian Army constituted the left wing of the Allied Forces. After passing through France and Belgium (with some fierce battles against the Germans) they end up in Holland. With its many rivers and channels, Holland is easy to defend for the Germans, hence a nightmare for the Allied Troops. Especially the province of Zeeland is difficult to attack. In 1944 and 1945 this area becomes a bloody battlefield. After the Allied Forces finally beat the Germans in Zeeland, they march to the next province Brabant. Bit by bit Holland is liberated. To the expense of many Canadian lives. But also to the great joy and happiness of the Dutch people who adore ‘their’ liberators and celebrate freedom in endless parades and parties. |
Reason for submission in English |
From D-day to the Dam is a special and unique project of the dutch history program ‘Changing Times’ (Andere Tijden). This documentary is fully based on footage-material. It tells the story of Canadian Soldiers liberating Europe (and Holland) during World War II. With breath-taking accuracy the Canadian Army Photo and Film Unit filmed the army during their march through France and Belgium, to end in Holland. Accompanied only by fragments of letters and diaries in the sound, the images show the soldier’s life; the sorrow and the joy, the military difficulties and victories. It is a war ‘road movie’ which keeps the viewer in a spell; with the original footage-material (and the original texts from personal documents) we are as close to the ‘real’ life as we can get. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
In his widely acclaimed History of Modern Britain, Andrew Marr gives an epic account of the events that have shaped our lives since the end of the Second World War. With a dynamic mixture of footage shot specially on location and archive of actual events, Marr wittily weaves together crucial turning points and telling little details to charts the evolution of Britain’s place in the world since 1945. The many strands of our national story are brought convincingly to life by the use of a wide range of archive sources woven into a gripping national saga. |
Reason for submission in English |
Audiences and critics were drawn to this series by an extraordinary range of archive, which complemented Andrew Marr’s compelling story-telling. Archive drawn from every decade of the post-war period enhances his solid grasp of characters and events, and often adds a new layer to our national memory bank. Each piece of personal and political gossip is brought to life by carefully selected images and sound, which attracted a huge popular audience to revisit the dramas of our recent past. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
This two hour special followed the journey of conflict-resolution specialist Lord Paddy Ashdown as he examined the historical, religious and political claims to “God’s City”. He threw himself into an emotionally challenging personal experience, coming face to face with the memories and the lives of ordinary Muslims and Jews as well as key players in the Six Day War story. Who owns Jerusalem is the intractable problem, at the heart of the Middle Eastern crisis. Battle for the Holy Land examined why the Holy City remains the most fought over piece of real-estate on the planet – and how , with greater understanding, we could move forward. |
Reason for submission in English |
The history of the city of Jerusalem is disputed. The only way in which to give evidence was to show history in the making. The archive used in the film did just that. Within days of the capture of the Western Wall, bulldozers were brought in by the Israeli army to destroy the Moroccan Quarter and make room for a plaza where thousands of Jews could and still do, go to worship. People across the globe were ignorant of this fact and some even disputed the existence of the Moroccan Quarter at all. In order to prove its existence and its destruction, CTVC searched the international archives, especially within Irael to find startling footage of the bulldozers in action. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
This is the untold story of the struggle to save soldiers’ lives, from the battlefield of Agincourt to the streets of Basra. Today we expect British soldiers to receive swift and expert medical attention, but for most of the past 600 years, British soldiers have instead experienced terrible neglect, suffering and needless death. It took centuries to turn this situation around. Presented by military historian Andrew Robertshaw, and co-produced with the National Army Museum, ‘Blood & Bullets’ explores one of military history’s most significant - and yet neglected -stories. |
Reason for submission in English |
‘Blood and Bullets’ uses archive film to illustrate a powerful, important and neglected story. The film uses footage filmed at the Western Front during the First World War to highlight the work of figures who are often in the background – Medical Officers, stretcher-bearers, ambulance-drivers. This film puts the activity of such people into context, explaining the sophistication and scale of their crucial role. The film also uses archive film of British casualty treatment and evacuation in Iraq, and footage of Royal Army Medical Corps training exercises to emphasise the growing sophistication of military medicine. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
The story of the revolution in love sex and marriage in Britain during the past fifty years. Episode 1 explores the dream of true love in the 1950s and 60s and the lasting impact it had from teenage years onwards. The film focuses on the love lives of five characters ranging from an ordinary housewife to Britain's most famous prostitute, who reveals that she too has always been a romantic at heart. |
Reason for submission in English |
The series attracted critical acclaim and large audiences- winning its slot against all competition for the three weeks of its run. Dramatic and heart rending it successfully delivered a very popular yet informative social history series for Britain's most commercial channel. The skilful interweaving of factual and feature film footage from the 50s and 60s -and the absence of any reconstruction- was well received by critics |

Brief Synopsis in English |
The Cold War ended and the Soviet Union was dissolved. Only then was it possible to look beyond the myth of Che Guevara and begin to search for his “ghostly” remains, gone missing for some 30 years. From 1967 (the year of Che’s execution) to 1997 (the year his body was recovered) international political events kept the remains of Ernesto Che Guevara hidden from the world, making the recovery of history’s most famous revolutionary all but impossible. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
Massive, majestic, breathtaking—the Sydney Harbour Bridge was the greatest engineering challenge of its day anywhere on earth. Completed during the Great Depression, it is the legacy of a fateful partnership between two very different men - a brilliant engineer and a maverick politician - who shared a relentless ambition to create "the people's bridge". It not only altered the life of a city forever, it became a symbol of a bold young nation and a changing world. Celebrating the 75th anniversary of one of Australia's most loved icons, this is the epic and definitive story behind the building of the bridge and the vision of those who made it happen, despite personal conflict and political intrigue. |
Reason for submission in English |
"Simon Nasht, has masterfully interwoven archival footage and photographs, parliamentary debates, interviews with historians, and vividly realized factual drama to create a must see documentary for any one interested in this volatile time in Australia's development. I would highly recommend this film to historians and family historians for the wonderful insight it gives to this between-the-wars period of Australian life." Brief Synopsis in English |
This film tells the story of the Cold War through the prism of its least known arena: Africa. Against colonialism, capitalism as well as communism, the newly independent nations attempted for the first time to gain real control of their own countries. Ironically, it was to Cuba’s new regime that the young African revolutionaries like Patrice Lumumba, Amilcar Cabral or Aghostino Neto turned for support in their struggle. Castro’s tiny island emerged as central player in this new strategy. |
Reason for submission in English |
This film tells the story of the Cold War through the prism of its least known arena: Africa. In order to relate such an untold and incredible story, Jihan El Tahri has mainly searched through Cuban and African records and found a huge amount footage. Working in collaboration with Le Chaînon Manquant, and especially Emmanuelle Dumas and Serge Garcin, she dealt with many unreleased footage, which sometimes were of very poor technical quality because they had been left unused for decades by the owners. With her cameraman, she decided to shoot the footage in HD format, and therefore contributed to upgrade the footage and help preserve this great heritage. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
Darfur: On Our Watch examines why it took the UN so long to respond to the obvious early warning signs of an horrific ethnic cleansing in Sudan. It documents in detail how politics, oil, guns and money trumped human rights as powerful interests on the Security Council blocked the world from acting; and how the United States, weakened by wars in Somalia and Iraq could not influence the world forum to act. CBC cameras follow actress Mia Farrow on an emotionally harrowing journey through the desolate refugee camps along the Chad/ Darfur border. |
Reason for submission in English |
After compiling all the footage available, much of it quite gruesome, of the killings in Darfur, the challenge was how to present it, along with distressing images of the genocides of the 1990s in a way that documented the reality without crossing the line of what was watchable to viewers at home. We sifted through hours of UN footage to chillingly show how the world’s words failed to result in meaningful action. The archival footage, most of it in SD, also had to work with the original footage which was all shot on HD. |

Attacks on ships clearly marked with the Red Cross are war crimes. The sinking of such vessels in the First World War renewed hatred of the enemy. The discovery of two torpedoed hospital ships in the Bristol Channel is dredging up more than tragic memories. Divers scouring the remains are unearthing uncomfortable new evidence which casts a different light on enemy atrocities. The Germans might not have been the only ones breaking the rules. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
Diana, Princess of Wales was perhaps the most photographed person in the world. Her death in a car crash in August 1997 stunned the world. The blame was put squarely on the photographers who surrounded her in death as well as in life. For ten years conspiracy theories, claims and counter-claims obscured what actually happened that night. The photographers witnessed and recorded one of the most terrible and iconic moments of the 20th century. But for ten years that night and the photographs they took has plagued their lives. This was the first time the story of the photographers arrested that night was told. |
Reason for submission in English |
This film uses some of the photographs that were taken by passers-by as well as professionals and help to establish what went on in the tunnel that night. Some had not been seen on television before. The programme set the national news agenda for nearly two weeks in June for its inclusion of some of these images. No other programme featuring archive content made such a splash this year. It pulled in a prime time audience of more than 4 million, the biggest audience for a specialist factual programme on Channel 4 this year. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
On January 8th January 1979 an oil tanker, the “Betelgeuse”, exploded at Gulf Oil’s Whiddy Terminal, Bantry Bay. The explosion was of such magnitude that it was heard as far away as Kenmare.
