What better way to showcase some of the best bloopers from UTV reporters and presenters than to create an advent calendar revealing each new blunder day by day throughout the run up to Christmas. What’s more it entices the user to revisit the site daily. Designed in flash with a twinkling starry design and sponsored by the Outlet store it appears as a splash page before you enter the UTV main site. The added extra is that you can email the calendar to a friend via the attached email fields at the bottom of the calendar.

The advent calendar is a great way to show our archived content but in a creative humorous way.

The Mediatheque at BFI Southbank provides free access to complete films and TV programmes from the BFI National Archive (and other regional film archives from July 2008). Streamed mpeg4 files provide instant viewing access, enabling users to watch anything from silent shorts from 1896 to complete feature films and TV series. A sophisticated search engine enables users to search by over 130 categories. In addition to the general public, the Mediatheque is used by schools and community groups every week. 20,000 people have used the Mediatheque in the first 9 months of operation.

The Mediatheque has revolutionised the way in which people can access their moving image heritage, providing access to British (and British-related) film and TV from over 200 different rights holders. The innovative way in which the Mediatheque is curated encourages users to explore titles that they don't already know and has created considerable demand beyond our usual constituency. Over 90% of titles in the Mediatheque are not available to buy on DVD. The second in a series of UK-wide BFI Mediatheques will open in Derby in July 2008.

Focus on Film is a free to access website that allows students to investigate film as a source of evidence for the past. The 4 areas of the website include: an illustrated introduction to the nature of film as source evidence; a range of pre-prepared teaching activities which allow students to understand films in their historical context; an extensive archive of over 8 hours of film clips, catalogued with contextual information; and a fully functioning web-based editing suite which allows students to work directly with around 200 film clips and still images to create their own work.

Drawing from the remarkable Film Australia archives, Moving History Online is a cross platform co-production between Film Australia and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. It features an interactive website with screen stories, records, interviews, stills and characters from 60 years of documentary-making corresponding with a season of outstanding Film Australia documentaries screening on ABC2. Together they create a comprehensive gallery of faces and events that reflect the changes in post war society as Film Australia brought Australia to Australians and the world.

Open Vault provides online access to unique and historically important content produced by public television station WGBH for individual and classroom learning. Topics covered range from desegregation and busing, the Cold War, interviews with and performances by leading dancers, writers and poets, and much more. Highlights include Muhammad Ali discussing his refusal to fight in Vietnam, African-American students arriving at school during Boston's court-ordered de-segregation and Robert McNamara reading from a letter sent by Nikita Khrushchev to President Kennedy during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1981 The Animals Film was the first serious attempt ever to expose our troubled and contradictory relationship with the other species who occupy our world. In addition to undercover filming, the film includes an array of archive film found on three continents, from footage obtained under the US Freedom of Information Act to government propaganda films, early silent films, cartoons, newsreels and home movies, the systemic exploitation of animals is probed. Narrated by Julie Christie, with original music by Robert Wyatt, this feature-length documentary had national cinema distribution before its broadcast on Channel Four’s third night on air in 1982.

To celebrate its 25th anniversary, The Animals Film was released on DVD for the first time in the UK in June 2007 in a specially updated edition. This stimulated media interest once again and cinema screenings in cities across the UK. The Animals Film still has the ability after all this time to stimulate and change the consciousness of an audience whether in cinema, its natural home, or on the television screen. Much of the film's lasting power is derived from its comprehensive depiction of the subject unsurpassed to this day. The integration of an astonishing treasure trove of archival footage is a key reason for the film's enduring impact.

The North West Film Archive is a unique collection of material from counties Derry and Donegal. The archive provides free public access to over 90 hours of film in the form of 260 separate items, including documentaries, news reels, television news and drama from broadcasters, short films, animation and Super 8 home movies. Highlights include the films of local filmmakers Terence McDonald, and Atsy McCaul. Since the 1980s, the region has become a centre of film and television production, represented by the award-winning work of Derry Film and Video, West Way films, Raw Nerve Productions and Perfect Cousins Productions.

The Nerve Centre was established in 1990 as a focal point for youth culture in Derry/Londonderry. By bringing popular music, film, video, animation and interactive multimedia together under one roof, the Nerve Centre promotes creative collaboration and fusion between artists and provides a stepping stone into the creative industries for young people throughout Northern Ireland. The archive showcases local talent, provides a resource for researchers and filmmakers, and allows the local community to access film made by and / or about them, long after these films have been broadcast or screened locally.
