Brief Synopsis in English

This program was an independently produced, ground-breaking television event. It was the first sports broadcast in history to be digitally restored in color. The original production had aired live in B&W 47 years earlier. Using the latest restoration technology, the one remaining kinescope from 1960 was first preserved and then enhanced. A high-resolution digital program was produced with over 62,000 frames restored and colorized. A process that took a team of specialists in San Diego and India over 10,000 man hours to complete.

Reason for submission in English

This program was a sports television first. The process was expensive and time consuming, but there was a commitment to create a new way to showcase an historical sporting event - in this case, a landmark golf competition - considered to be the very tournament that popularized the sport in America. Remarkable results were achieved through the colorization process and at the same time a timeless, classic sports moment was preserved. A dusty, neglected kinescope was transformed into a modernized production, entertaining a whole new generation of viewers and golf fans.

Brief Synopsis in English

Máirtín Ó Cadhain (1906 – 1970) was one of the most prominent Irish language writers of the twentieth century. This rare documentary from RTÉ’s Television Archives, directed by Aindreas Ó Gallchóir, takes Máirtín Ó Cadhain on a journey through the landscape of his people and his past, so vividly portrayed in his writing throughout his lifetime. We see Ó Cadhain here in 1967 at a reflective stage in his life, talking directly to the viewer, and mingling within that locality, amongst the ruins of his childhood home, along with the people and the landscape of his native Connemara.

Reason for submission in English

The film itself is worthy of praise for the quality of the picture and sound. Painstakingly restored by the archives team at RTÉ, it enables the viewer to enjoy the quality of the film as Ó Cadhain and viewers in 1967 would have done, eliminating all the technical signs of decay and degradation which occurs in film of this age. The restoration brings to the fore the textures of landscape and language, through Máirtín Ó Cadhain’s reflections of his people and his past, so vividly portrayed in his writing throughout his lifetime.

Brief Synopsis in English

Seán Ó Mordha's beautiful documentary of Cork sculptor Seamus Murphy was filmed in 1969. It follows Murphy commenting on a then newly-installed sculpture exhibition in Fitzgerald Park, Murphy in his studio, and his reminiscences of life as a stonecutter in bygone days. The sculptor also brings us on a tour of Kilcrea Abbey, where fine examples of stonecutting craftsmanship can be seen. The title of the film is taken from Seamus Murphy's book of the same name, published in 1966. Seán Ó Riada composed the score for the documentary.

Reason for submission in English

Originally transmitted on RTÉ Television on 6th October 1969 this restored documentary from the RTÉ Archive was repeated on 16th July 2007 to coincide with the Seamus Murphy Centenary Celebrations in Cork. The film itself is worthy of praise for the quality of the picture and sound. Painstakingly restored by the archives team at RTÉ, it enables the viewer to enjoy the quality of the film as Seamus Murphy and viewers in 1969 would have done, eliminating all the technical signs of decay and degradation which occurs in film of this age. The restoration evokes the memory of early 20th Century Cork and gives us insight into the trade and tradition of stone carving.

Brief Synopsis in English

The first true Alfred Hitchcock film, 'The Lodger' is full of the familiar dramatic visual touches that are associated with his later work and is his earliest feature that remains in it's entirety. This modern version of the man who is wrongly thought to be Jack the Ripper stars Ivor Novello as the title character.

Reason for submission in English

Using the British Film Institute's only existing and complete, hand-tinted 35mm print, Granada International have transferred this landmark film to High Definition paying distinct attention to matching the tints and hues throughout (using the original tinting guide). The image was thoroughly cleaned removing literally thousands of defects, and parts of the picture were stabilsed, producing a far superior image than anything existing previously. This not only preserves the subject for future generations but allows the feature to be screened via digital projection in theatres.

Brief Synopsis in English

Jack Nicklaus dreamed of winning The Open Championship at St Andrews. However, in 1970 the main focus of the final round was on the colourful American Doug Sanders. On the 18th green Sanders had a seemingly simple three foot putt to win his first major, but standing over the putt he hesitated, bent down to remove what he thought was a blade of grass, and then subsequently missed the shot! He went into an 18 hole playoff with Nicklaus and eventually lost to his compatriot. This fantastically restored film also features golfing legends including Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino and Tony Jacklin.

Reason for submission in English

From the A/B rolls we made a new 16mm internegative at Haghefilm, and using Martin Sawyer Sound Services we also made a new 16mm magnetic sound track from a combined optical print. Using these new elements, The Machine Room painstakingly restored the film to the incredible quality that it is today. After going through a full grade it was transferred to HDCam SR where it was then put through Teranex. Finally it was ingested into MTI where approximately forty hours were spent going through frame by frame to remove remaining artefacts. Finally the audio was restored to match the picture.

Programme Duration (Mins):

20 minutes

Brief Synopsis in English

Turn of the Tide – Liverpool’s Emergence as an Industrial Power is one of three landmark films made for Liverpool City Council in 1967 to promote the City worldwide and showcase the culture, industry and standard of living in Liverpool. Featuring manufacturing industries such as cars, paints, toys, stockings and soft drinks, the film is optimistic at a difficult time in the City’s history. It appears on the DVD Liverpool on Film alongside a brief feature about the NWFA and the restoration project, offering a glimpse of the before-and-after and serving to emphasise the magic worked by PresTech Laboratories Ltd.

Reason for submission in English

All surviving copies of Turn of the Tide had become magenta –it was urgently necessary to invest in commissioning a full colour digital restoration and 35mm preservation project. This was undertaken by PresTech in 2006, in preparation for DVD release in 2007. Launched to an appreciative public at the Odeon in Liverpool, and screened to the profession at the AMIA conference in Rochester, NY, the quality of PresTech's restoration of Turn of the Tide had been widely acclaimed as excellent. The fast-selling Liverpool on Film archive compilation DVD was produced to celebrate Liverpool as European Capital of Culture ‘08.
