Brief Synopsis in English |
This documentary tells the forgotten story of the Tailteann Games - a massive sporting and cultural festival first staged in 1924 by the Irish Free State to announce to the world the birth of Irish independence. Inspired by the ancient Aonach Tailteann festival of pre-Christian Ireland, the modern games were billed as ' the Irish Olympics', and on three occasions between 1924 and 1932 attracted thousands of athletes from across the Irish emigrant world to Dublin to a mass celebration of Irish culture and port. Comh-mhaoiniú/BCI The Tailteann Games were meant to become a permanent fixture occurring every four years for evermore. However, many within the political establishment did not share the Games' ideals and as the 1930's arrived a bitter struggle for the future of 'the Irish Olympics' commenced. Weaving previously unseen movie footage of the sporting events - from gaelic football to motorbike racing, from archery to golf - together with fascinating insights from sport and history experts - "Aonach Tailteann" paints a thrilling picture of an important but hitherto forgotten episode from our sporting and cultural past. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
In 2006, Derry City FC took part in 6 remarkable games in their 'UEFA CUP' campaign. It was the club's most successful achievement in Europe ever, almost making the group stages of the competition. This DVD tells that story and features fans' footage from all over the world as well as a player's 'behind the scenes' view of events. |
Reason for submission in English |
We were commissioned by the 'Derry City FC Support Group' to produce this DVD in November 2006 with a delivery date of June 2007. We put out an appeal for fans' footage and received material from all over the world! The games played were against IFK Gothenburg ( Sweden), Gretna ( Scotland) and PSG (Paris) so we got a lot of footage from fans of these clubs as well. The DVD makes great use of cutting in TV footage with fans' footage alongside a player's material filmed 'behind the scenes'. At one stage we had almost 45 hours of source material and we had to cut this down to 3 hours (including 'extras') for the DVD. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
Hosted by renowned CBS Sports Golf Anchor Jim Nantz, this half hour features a nostalgic look back by Jack Nicklaus and Lee Trevino discussing their illustrious careers in golf. They discuss the famous shot heard round the world by Jack Nicklaus at the 1972 U.S. Open amongst many other moments they shared together at Major Championships and on Tour, including the controversial moment where Trevino tossed a rubber snake at Nicklaus..an innocent gesture that at the time was construed as poor sportsmanship. |
Reason for submission in English |
Use of archival footage from these Major Championships provides the viewer with a trip back in time to these great moments in the golfing careers of two legends. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
This program was an independently produced, ground-breaking television event. It was the first sports broadcast in history to be digitally restored in color. The original production had aired live in B&W 47 years earlier. Using the latest restoration technology, the one remaining kinescope from 1960 was first preserved and then enhanced. A high-resolution digital program was produced with over 62,000 frames restored and colorized. A process that took a team of specialists in San Diego and India over 10,000 man hours to complete. Colour restoration by Legend Films. |
Reason for submission in English |
This program was a sports television first. The process was expensive and time consuming, but there was a commitment to create a new way to showcase an historical sporting event - in this case, a landmark golf competition - considered to be the very tournament that popularized the sport in America. Remarkable results were achieved through the colorization process and at the same time a timeless, classic sports moment was preserved. A dusty, neglected kinescope was transformed into a modernized production, entertaining a whole new generation of viewers and golf fans. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
In this one off special, Nation on Film delved into the archives of the 1976 West Indies cricket tour of England. The series will forever be remembered for the television interview given by the England cricket captain Tony Greig when he declared that he intended to make the West Indies team ‘Grovel’. It set the scene for a long hot summer when the drama of what happened within the boundary was matched by tensions beyond it. Through the archive this dramatic and multifaceted story is explored. An all star cast including Sir Vivian Richards, Michael Holding, Sir Clive Lloyd, Tony Greig, Harold 'Dickie' Bird, Brian Close and Darcus Howe help examine this precious footage and tell the story behind the film. |

Brief Synopsis in English |
This documentary conducts a unique experiment into how English football has changed in the past 50 years. Drawing on archive footage and computer analysis, it compares every aspect of the FA Cup Finals of 2007 and 1957 - the year of a dramatic Wembley encounter between Manchester United and Aston Villa. How did the players pass the ball, how skilful were they and how hard did they tackle? Also featuring interviews with players from the 1957 final and contributors including Sir Tom Finney and former England manager Graham Taylor, the film uncovers a lost era of English football. |
Reason for submission in English |
The programme demonstrates how archive footage can be used in a fresh and exciting way, by applying the latest sports analysis techniques to material shot 50 years ago. Period footage from off the pitch places 1950s football in its wider cultural context. The result casts as much light on the present as it does on the past, clearly showing the value of archive material as a programme-making resource. |
