Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Not everything has been said about the “war to end all wars”, about the history of that immense treachery and infinite waste. Far from it. Following the analysis of Annette Becker, one of the leading scholars in this new historiographical approach, we would like to offer a new perspective on this conflict whose extent, violence and character foreshadowed and gave rise to many of the tragedies of the 20th century.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The 1968 uprisings reached their peak in May. But before Paris burned, a youth rebellion had already shaken Poland and Czechoslovakia. Guerrilla warfare, following the leader of Cuba, flared up in Latin America. And in the USA, the issues of civil rights, the assassination of Martin Luther King and the contestation to the Vietnam War brought thousands onto the streets in violent protest.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

1968 will tell the story of an extraordinary year through a narrative rich in images. This film will be exclusively made up of archives. We are working with different researchers throughout the world. Eighty percents of the archives will be in color. Indeed, the sheer quality and quantity of the archive footage available means that we can more easily tell and link the events, put them into the historical background and give them meaning and coherence.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

New York City, September 11th, 2001. The morning everything changed. Despite the horror and incomprehensibility of what they witnessed, people around the city knew they had a responsibility to document what they saw. They reached for their cameras. "102 Minutes that Changed America" features original footage from more than 100 amateur and professional sources. The sights and sounds of that morning- from the time of the first plane's impact into One World Trade Center at 8:48a.m. until the eventual collapse of both buildings 102 minutes later- have been meticulously woven together, and are presented without narration or commentary. The result is an intensely emotional and immersive documentary that faithfully preserves the morning of 9/11 as it happened, and as it was experienced by those who were there. It is an evocative, authentic, and reverential memorial to one of the most cataclysmic events in world history.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

This project was completely 100% reliant on the source material recorded inside New York by people who witnessed September 11th firsthand. As Source libraries were an important element to this film, the moments woven together by the numerous amateurs was the glue that held this project together. It is the experience relived through these peoples spoken thoughts and quick movements that flow with this moment in time.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

In November 1983 a misunderstanding nearly unleashed World War Three. The Soviets thought they were about to be attacked and prepared a nuclear retaliation against the West. Yet unlike the Cuban Missile Crisis, this story happened behind closed doors. This film tells of intelligence blunders by the KGB and the CIA, and of a NATO exercise that nearly provoked Armageddon. It tells how MI6 got the truth through a double agent, and how a German spy at the heart of NATO helped defuse the crisis. An incredible Cold War terror story told for the first time on TV.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Making 1983 - THE BRINK OF APOCALYPSE required massive research - in finding all the key protagonists in the US, UK and Russia, and in tracking down the relevant film to tell this unknown story. The brief was to make the film ‘sing’ with the sounds and images of 1983 so we researched everything from pop videos to the White House footage from the Reagan Library, much of which has never been shown before. This unusual mix of footage is creatively combined to tell a tight, terrifying narrative. The film recently won the Grierson Award for Best Historical Documentary.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

This film explores the debate over the wartime Pope and his alleged silence during the Nazi Holocaust. Featuring interviews with leading historical scholars, leaders in the Jewish community and those who personally knew Pius XII, "A Hand of Peace" details the efforts to assist Jews and other victims of Nazi atrocities. This gripping documentary looks at the difficult choices Pius XII faced and provides convincing proof that his actions saved tens of thousands of Jewish lives.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

We believe our film on Pope Pius XII and the Holocaust utilizes various archival sources and incorporates rarely seen footage allowing us to tell a story from the past with deep contemporary implications. We believe this film has ramifications for Jewish-Christian dialogue, Pius XII’s legacy and diplomatic relations between Israel and the Vatican. Its message is focused on ascertaining the truth about Pius XII’s war time actions while at the same time building a dialogue that can help pave the way for improved interfaith communication.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Unsurpassed in the world’s taxi pecking order, London cabbies carry a photographic memory of the city’s layout (following years on the notoriously gruelling Knowledge) and drive the most iconic cab in the world. Yet they are the most maligned characters on our city’s streets. By eavesdropping on the cabman’s shelter in Russell Square and exploring the stories of five extraordinary cabbies, whose experience spans 70 years on the unforgiving streets of the capital, Arena: Cab Driver goes well beyond the average ten minute journey to unearth the soul of the London cab driver…

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Footage from the London Transport Museum vaults and the BBC’s London collection is intercut playfully with the wry observations of contemporary cabbies to create a poignant portrait of a London profession and icon.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

This feature-length documentary film takes a fresh look at the extraordinary events and personalities that brought about the 1918 Armistice. Professor David Reynolds ventures beyond the familiar British account of Remembrance Day to unravel how Germany plunged to total defeat in just a few months at the end of the war. Re-examining first-hand testimonies, photographs and archive film footage, he uncovers the story of the German Army’s implosion – a bitter endgame of wounded egos, mental illness and political brinkmanship as statesmen and generals haggled over the terms of peace, while, at the front, the soldiers fought on amidst sustained brutality.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The historic film footage used is integral in telling the less familiar story of the German perspective on the Great War. Searing film images of devastation in the German trenches haunt the film and are edited innovatively through atmospheric picture-in-picture dissolves or in feverish short bursts to evoke the mental breakdown of the film’s central character, General Ludendorff, as he and his war effort fall apart in 1918. To depict the chaotic brutality of fighting, the archive footage is cut dramatically to original IWM sound effects. Careful attention is also made to historical accuracy and illustrating specific detail where possible.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Topography of Memory is a reflection on how public policies around the world have dealt with the past, that is, how collective memory comes to turns with its past and the myths surrounding it. What should be done to ensure there is space for a host of different voices and memories? To answer this question, Topography of Memory looks at models in Europe, Africa and America that have, or have not, tried to deal with their past in different ways: bearing witness, confessing to crimes, bringing the guilty to justice, purging public administration, documenting the past, commemorating events, etc.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Since this programme covers several civil conflicts from different countries, it features footage from South Africa, Germany, Italy, Argentina and Spain, from different periods of the XX century. We have had access to the STASI files, the secret police of the former Democratic Republic of Germany (DDR). Also, on the chapter dedicated to South Africa, we have included footage from the CVET (Community Video Education Trust) of Cape Town.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

British Style Genius is a five part landmark documentary series that celebrates the genius of British fashion, from the rebellious self-styling teenage tribes of Teddy Boys and Mods, to the impeccable craft of the Savile Row tailors; from the timeless appeal of the classic English country brands of Burberry and Barbour, to the outrageous revolutionary designs of Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. This is a series which is both archive rich but which boasts unique access to the greatest names in British fashion from the last 50 years

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The submitted episode - 'Loud And Proud' - explores fresh territory; the way in which (mostly) working class British men have brilliantly appropriated fashion and style that was not intended for them. From Teds, to Mods, to Skinheads and Casuals, the archive researcher was called upon to source footage of British subcultures which, by their very nature, were not always filmed in the context in which we were depicting them. The archive researcher skillfully sourced material that avoided the obvious news footage (showing our subjects engaged in riots and violent acts). The archive supported and enhanced the narrative, perfectly echoing its attitude and pace.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

From 1937 to 1948 gold, silver, platinum and diamonds were looted by the Imperial Japanese Army during its campaigns throughout Asia - a treasure trove worth billions whose location has remained unclear until today. Rumour had it that hundreds of tonnes of gold were buried in the Philippines. Reason enough for the former US General John Singlaub to organize a major hunt for the Japanese spoils of war on the Philippines in 1998. Was Singlaub successful? What happened to the gold? Did it end up in the coffers of the CIA?

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The sinking of the car ferry The Princess Victoria in 1953 was one of the worst maritime disasters in Irish and British waters. On a routine journey from Stranraer to Larne one wintry Saturday, a freak storm hit the ship in broad daylight. The crew battled for six hours to save her but she was finally capsized by heavy weather. Most of the 177 passengers and crew perished only a few miles from Belfast Lough. Why, in a place and era renowned for Irish shipping, was a relatively new boat lost? And what about the families who lost loved ones on that cold January day fifty-five years ago?

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Disaster can strike at any community, but within weeks the world often moves on. However, left in the wake of such tragedy, the memories of those lost are not forgotten by the people and communities closest to them. By re-creating a significant episode in Ireland's maritime history the tragedy was not forgotten and lessons were learned.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

"Barnardo Boy": An archaeological excavation on a Great War battlefield reveals a mortar pit where a band of brothers fought . Evidence leads to a name: Will Maybury, the soldier who led the group into battle. The film uncovers Maybury’s moving, Dickensian story as a “Barnardo Boy”: the eldest of three orphans rescued from poverty in Sheffield, shipped to Canada, then separated. None were told where their siblings were, but they longed to reunite. Ten years later, Will and his sister find each other--but all too briefly. The war begins and Will goes off to The Front, never to return.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Everyday photographs from another age are used to tell the poignant story of an ordinary soldier with an extraordinary past. Photographs taken at critical junctures in the soldier’s life. The search to identify the soldier, whose existence is revealed by an archaeological excavation, is punctuated by poignant visual finds— from extraordinary personal photographs to postcards to archive stills. The Barnardo Charity’s archives revealed deeply affecting portrait pictures of Will Maybury and his siblings from the day they were taken in as orphans. A series of postcards illuminate the story of the boy’s life alone in Canada. And another set of photographs were discovered that document a single day after Will and his sister are finally reunited—the happiest time of his life. A final postcard sent by Will from war-torn Europe ends with a simple and affecting phrase: "Bye-bye."

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

It was one of the major events of the 20th Century : on May 14th 1948 in Tel Aviv, David ben Gurion, in front of a thousand people moved to tears, proclaimed the creation of the State of Israel. For Jews around the world it was a dream come true and the end of two thousand years of exile. Jews were enabled to come to the Holy Land and try to forget centuries of persecution which culminated with the slaughter of two thirds of EuropeÕs Jews during the Nazi regime. The odyssey of the Jewish people during the 1930s and 40s is a story of humanity whose consequences can still be felt sixty years later. For the death camp survivors, the creation of the State of Israel was of huge comfort. But for the 700 000 Palestinians who fled or were forced to flee the new country in 1948, it was the beginning of new injustice. How to explain, simply and clearly, a conflict whose shock waves still make the news today? This documentary of color film archives will look at the events of the 30s and 40s in Europe and the Middle East. Its goal is to inform and reach as many people as possible about the Second World War and the Middle East conflict. A look at history through the personal accounts of people who witnessed these events and through the lenses of amateur film-makers (in Germany, in the death camps, on the Eastern Front, on the ships that sailed illegally for Palestine after the War, in the new State of Israel...) These films will be accompanied with testimonies taken from diaries, letters and speeches of the time, read by actors.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

From Auschwitz to Jerusalem, directed Serge de Sampigny, retrace the creation of the state of Israel and From Jerusalem to Gaza, directed by Mathieu Schwartz, tell the story of the Palestinian people. The format is that one of a full-lenght feature, entirely with archives. The 2 films are based on personal destinies and testimonies of different jews and Palestinians, who all together tell the big story. Two film researchers, my colleague Kristina Varady and myself, Antoinette ChancŽ made during several months an inquiry to find documents of jews and Palestinians who have filmed moments of their history (exodus, life in the camps, the wars, the intifadas) but also their every day lives for the last 40 years. You will see personnal documents from families : Arens, Binheim, Katz, Khouri, Nour, Said, Weile. A lot of footage is added to understand the context of history. There are more twenty different sources of archives from germany, France, England, Israel, Palestine, United States. Among them we can mention some precious informer as Beth Hatefuzoth Center in Israel for the private collection of home movies, Ramattan News Agency in Gaza for the Abdelasalam M.Shehada's camera, or the Writers Tereska Torres for the extraordinary testimony about the Illegals directed by levin meyer in 1947 or Edward Said for his memories and childhood in Palestine.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Spaghetti, mian, ramen, noodles. Different names for just one food, stemming from a dough of flour and water. Today pasta is eaten around the world linking two totally different food civilizations: the Chinese and the Italian. Where does spaghetti come from? How is it made? How are we supposed to eat Spaghetti? Pasta historians and macaroni makers lead us through 4.000 years to discover how people in Naples, cooks in Shanxi Province and Japanese Soba Academists have made pasta an art, a culture and a life-style!

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The first is because there was an intense amount of research put into the production to find the most relevant and diverse clips possible. The second is because though archive footage only makes up ten percent of the film, a real effort was made to preserve and maintain the archive footage in its original form, keeping the sequences as long as possible, uncut.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Hidden Histories looks at the work of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales, which this year celebrates its centenary. The Commission both investigates Welsh history and stores a huge arcghive of records, drawings and photographs. The programme contains three stories, ranging in time from the Iron Age to the ninth century to the eighteenth century, and challenged us to use archive in innovative ways.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The programme contains extensive use of stills archive from the Royal Commission, plus moving images from the BBC archive, and we attempted to use these in imaginative ways which integrated the archiive into the action. The stills in the item on the copperworks excavation, for instance, are integrated into scenes from the site in a way which suggests both the past and the transience of human activity. Considerable thought went into the use of archive in such a heavily archive-driven programme, and we feel we came up with original and artistically pleasing solutions.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The Sydney Opera House is a freestanding sculpture of spherical roofs and sail-like shells covered in white ceramic tiles. Fifty years ago, its design was an adventure at the edge of what was technically achievable at the time. The roof shells looked impossible to build. Danish architect Jørn Utzon’s early designs simply did not work mathematically. Using today’s technology, building the opera house would be a challenge, but 50 years ago it was nearly impossible. Fast forward to modern times. The famous and loved icon is due for a makeover. And in a remarkable turn of events – Utzon has been reinstated as designer. Returning to the greatest work of his life, despite the fact that he has never seen it complete.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Hours of 35mm rushes from the 1960's were located and sorted through to find the most appropriate images. The selects were then transferred from the original 35mm to High Definition. This included rare footage of architect Jorn Utzon and coverage of the construction right from the ground-breaking launch ceremony through to completion. This was combined with Government owned material, newsreels, photographs and amateur film to tell the story of the construction of one of the world’s most iconic landmarks.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Using Robert Menzies’ World War II diaries and remarkable 16mm film, Menzies and Churchill at War lifts the lid on a bitter behind-the-scenes battle between Winston Churchill and the Australian Prime Minister as the fate of Australia hung in the balance. It follows Menzies to London during the dark months of 1941 as he took on the British Prime Minister over the strategic direction of the war. With Australia under threat of a Japanese attack, Menzies struggled to convince the autocratic British leader to send reinforcements to Singapore. The unequal struggle eventually cost Menzies his prime ministership, but lead to him developing a new vision for Australia, building a constituency of middle-class voters who swept him back to power to become Australia’s longest serving prime minister.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

This documentary uses remarkable footage shot by Australian Prime Minister Robert Menzies himself and gives a unique insight into his experiences in London during 1941.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Between 1968 and 1972, 24 men flew to the Moon. In just eight years 400,000 people across America united to accomplish this seemingly impossible task. While those who made the trip have become international heroes, the stories of the men and women who build the machines that went to the Moon are far less familiar. For the first time, 'Moon Machines' gathers together these engineering pioneers to recount their incredible stories. From the impossibly gigantic Saturn V rocket, to the fragile “tissue paper” lunar lander, the amazing tales of engineering are every bit as extraordinary as the men who flew them.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The Moon Machines production team invested a considerable amount of time and effort to track down film archive, sourced sites across America, in order to illustrate the intimate stories of the engineers who built the machines which took men to the Moon. By working closely with the engineering companies who made Apollo possible, and with NASA, the unique archive film footage uncovered for this series has brought visually the audacity of Apollo to a new audience. By transferring the 16 mm footage onto high definition tape, the footage used in the series is now preserved for a new generation.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

After WW2 the British state funded film-makers to embark on a special mission. Producers were asked to create films that would promote the use of public transport. Some critics called their work expensive propaganda, but British Transport Films made some of our finest post-war documentaries. Edgar Anstey, a leading figure in the British documentary movement, was the head of BTF. His unit became the base for a group of young and talented men who went to the very top of the film industry. This programme tells their story – from the creation of the unit to the winning of an Oscar.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

This is the first time the story of British Transport Films has been told on television. For years producers have raided the archive to illustrate stories about trains, public transport and post-war Britain. This programme tells the story from both sides of the camera and includes important testimony from members of the unit – including Billy Williams, John Legard, John Krish and Bob Paynter. Their work, and that of their colleagues, represents a key part of our film heritage. The programme also acted as a trigger for broadcasts of BTF films such as Elizabethan Express and Snowdrift at Bleath Gill. Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

On one hand there are organizations stemming from Jewish communities, on the other hand, charity organization from the civil society. All find themselves confronted with two anti-semitic inhumanities, from the first days of occupation: those of the Nazis, those of Vichy. About ten Jewish organizations of assistance coordinate secretly from June 15th, 1940, in Paris, in the occupied zone. About twenty Protestant and Jewish charity organisations meet in a committee in Nimes in a non-occupied zone from October 40. Each of them with their charismatic leaders, find themselves in the frontline to take care of the persecuted in internment camps, orphanages, soup kitchens. They are entailed in a race against death that little by little obliges them to convince the moral forces of the country, to carry out illegal activities to enter the resistance.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Although there are a lot of documentaries dealing with the rescue of the Jews in France during WW2, this programme is the first to outline the combined effort of different religious communities against the Shoah. A long term research resulted in the discovery of some unseen film archives and numerous documents, among them a handwritten annotation from Pétain. This docu-drama adopts a new language, a realisation that mixes images of that period and reconstructions in an original narrative flow. It is based at the same moment on the exploitation of archives, public or private, and on the rigorous narration, only reporting on authentic facts.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Antony Beevor, the award winning historian, tells the story of the last hundred days of the Nazi regime, as the Russians smash their way into Berlin, destroying 90% of the city, leaving only a secret network of underground bunkers. Many have been hidden from public view - until now. Eye witnesses, including the news reader who spoke the last words of the Nazi regime, tell their chilling stories as he explores what’s left underground – bunkers with their original beds, artillery shells, gun sights, gas masks and even a small helmet for a 15 year old boy.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

This footage – shot by forty Russian crews standing shoulder to shoulder with their front line troops – is some of the greatest war imagery every shot. It is immediate, visceral and totally immersive. Though some of this footage is familiar to watchers of historical programmes, we used it in a unique way – as counterpoint and context to a world never seen on television before. The footage shows the destruction of ninety per cent of Berlin overground. We filmed what survived in the bunkers deep beneath the city streets, a living time capsule set against extraordinary archive.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Rivers of Blood Forty years ago a speech of immense inflammatory power wrenched British society apart. Known as “Rivers of Blood”, it was delivered by maverick Conservative MP Enoch Powell. While his immediate popularity soared, the racist tone of the speech shut down all debate on immigration and ultimately ended Powell’s career. In this film Denys Blakeway assesses the impact of the speech and traces its effect on immigration policy and the rise of multiculturalism

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Rivers of Blood explores the most controversial political speech in post-war British history. The film painstakingly pieces together fragments of Enoch Powell's inflammatory 1968 address to explore the history of race relations and multiculturalism in the last four - tumultuous - decades. Only fragments of Powell's speech were actually recorded. Many of those reels were either lost or destroyed. For the first since the address was filmed Blakeway Productions assembled all the remaining footage - from a wide variety of very disparate sources - to show Powell's address and his wider argument in unprecedented detail. The film also contains arresting footage of the national upheaval that erupted following Powell's speech - the Smithfield meat porter and the East End dockers' marches on parliament. We see rare footage of Powell and the furore that each public appearance greeted in the highly charged months that followed. We see the fall-out from the speech - direct and on the doorstep - as black and white neighbours exchange blows. This is a film that - through the power of its archive - sums up a vanished Britain, a nation at the crossroads, and the repercussions of an epochal moment - captured on painstakingly researched and unearthed footage.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

SAS-THE ORIGINALS is a unique contribution to archive-based documentary-making in two ways. It uses archive interviews, the existence of which was a closely-kept secret, to tell for the first time ever the inside story of the birth of one of Britain’s most secretive organisations – the SAS – in the words of the men who did it. The SAS guards its secrets carefully; its founder, David Stirling, is supposed to have died without putting his story on record. But 25 years ago, at a secret location, Stirling and the handful of survivors of the men with him on Day One, told their stories – on film - for the first and only time.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Programme One tells how David Stirling broke the rules to form SAS, Programme Two tells the story of their North Africa desert war. Programme Three goes behind the lines with The Originals in Europe. • The capture of SAS-founder Stirling, his escapes and re-captures, his plan to set up a resistance movement in Eastern Europe, and his guidance of SAS even though he’s “in the bag.” • The behind-the-line operations at every stage of the liberation of Europe: Sicily – a real-life Guns of Navarrone operation in Sicily; carnage and disaster in Italy; parachute deep into France for D-Day; the push into Germany. • Capture, escapes from PoW camps, and 500-mile walks to freedom. • The behind-the-lines SAS padre who saved the life of one of The Originals and himself became an SAS legend. • And disbandment. All told in the secret archive interviews shot 25 years ago.

84-year-old Shimon Peres is one of the last great actors on the international political stage. He is also an amazing story teller who knows how to captivate his audience with his words. Christiane Vulvert and Samuel Lajus spent two weeks with Peres in Tel Aviv, where he told them his life story. The story of the little Jewish boy who emigrated to Palestine in 1934 is a magnificent tale in and of itself. But then came his meetings with Ben Gurion, Sadat, Kennedy, Bill Clinton... In this intimate face-to-face talk, Shimon Peres tells his story. His tale is also an epic of Israeli history, from the country’s founding to the historic peace talks. We take an extraordinary trip through history, thanks to never-before-seen archive footage, Shimon Peres’ private photos, and manuscripts that illustrate his story.

A two-part documentary on the history and people involved in the 100 years of Short Brothers – the first and oldest aircraft manufacturers in the world. Shorts developed very quickly from the world’s first order from the Wright Brothers – first to fly a powered aeroplane. They soon developed their own designs in their Rochester work, they built planes for the Navy in the First World War, developed the huge flying boats – one startling design was the piggy back called the Mayo, it allowed much heavier loads to be carried long distances by the smaller plane saving fuel on take off.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

In 1936 the factory at the present site at Queen’s Island was opened. During World War II the Shorts Brothers designed and built Stirling bombers and the famous Sunderland. After the War a Government contract for a vertical take off experimental plane was completed with great success and the largest plane the RAF had – the Belfast was built and their big success, the Skyvan family sold 480 planes, half of these are still flying today.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

In April 1920 Ireland was paralysed by a general strike. Outside Mountjoy jail huge crowds gathered demanding the release of hunger striking Irish Volunteers. Across the country Soviets on the Russian model had taken over workplaces and urban areas. Workers awaited the instruction to launch a Soviet style social revolution that might have swept the occupying British forces from the island and declared Ireland a socialist republic. The order never came. Soviet na Héireann explores that heady post World War 1 era when Ireland stood on the brink of a Soviet socialist revolution which would have utterly altered the course of its history.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

This series charts the behind-the-scenes story of summit meetings that shaped the modern world. Professor David Reynolds explores how clashes of nations were channelled into human drama in its simplest form – two leaders facing each other across a table, negotiating for huge odds. In 1985, Ronald Reagan Mikhail Gorbachev met in Geneva in 1985 with real doubts about each other and entrenched ideological positions. Yet, over two days of talks and despite major disagreements, Reagan saw the peacemaker in Gorbachev and reached out to him – the critical turning point that began the thaw in the Cold War.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The rich, carefully researched archive footage in this film constantly surprises, informs and entertains. Russia’s ‘era of stagnation’ is brought vividly to life through a sequence of funerals of successive geriatric leaders in the early 1980s, skilfully edited to emphasize the sense of déjà vu. At the summit, we see rare footage of behind-the-scenes actuality recorded by the Reagan camp – revealing Reagan moaning about his press, fiddling with his earpiece for simultaneous translation and being rehearsed by his staff. While the two leaders start to get on, the archive film demonstrates the hilariously poisonous chemistry that developed between their wives.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Set against the backdrop of the 2008 Presidential Election, Simon Schama travels through America to dig deep into the conflicts of its history to understand what is at stake right now. America's prosperity has long been built on its relationship with the land and their natural resources, but now America is facing recession and optimism about land and resources is in danger of coming to a grinding halt. As it enters an era of limits, neither Presidential candidate can ignore the challenges facing the nation.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The AMERICAN FUTURE: A HISTORY by Simon Schama is an unusual project in that it combines current affairs and history, inter-cutting original footage of American during the recent election, contemporary archive of the candidates and a rich variety of historical archive relevant to the subject of the individual episode. The way the archive was srouces and edited was designed to express the close resonance between the past and the present, both epic and intimate, in a mosaic, which we hoped would give the historical stories the immediate drama of contemporary events and the current stories the depth of history.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The Conspiracy Files delved into the final mystery of 9/11: a third tower at the World Trade Centre, which along with the Twin Towers, also collapsed that day. But this skyscraper was never hit by an aeroplane. The 47-storey tower collapsed seven hours after the Twin Towers. It has become the subject of heated speculation and a host conspiracy theories suggesting it was brought down by a controlled demolition. The programme speaks to the official investigators and their many critics, to find out what really happened and why some people think there was a sinister plot to destroy the building.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Archive was vital and integral to the programme. It formed vital evidence in unlocking the truth behind the conspiracy theories. Some theories have grown up because until recently, there was very little footage in the public domain. The programme was able to highlight several examples where the archive shows clearly what happened. For example, archive of the south face of WTC 7 showed smoke billowing out of the building, in contrast to what some critics said that the smoke was going into the building. Archive was also crucial to showing the scale of the fires another highly contentious issue.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Northern Ireland has had many historic days in the past 40 years. October 5th, 1968 could be the most important. Featuring interviews from America, Europe and Northern Ireland.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

In this archive based documentary the producer/director felt it was important to try and use the archive in a different and innovative way. The producer felt that using a mix of audio and graphics would help set the context of the story and provide the viewer with an alternative viewing experience. Designed in an almanac style, this series of short interstitials is intended for broadcast nightly. It chooses one event each year from 1943 onwards and focuses on the unfolding of the situation. Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

April 5, 1968. It's the day after the assassination of Dr. King. America's inner cities are on fire, and Boston officials hope that James Brown can help quiet their city. This documentary focuses on Brown's extraordinary, history-making concert at the Boston Garden, putting events of that day into the context of the times, and, from the inside, telling the dramatic story of what happened that night, spotlighting this crucible moment in Brown's life. Up to that moment, James Brown had been a great artist, a successful businessman, a civil rights activist and an American patriot. On April 5, 1968, he became a hero.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

When David Leaf came to us and asked us to help produce and head up the archive research and handle the clearances, we didn't hesitate. This was a real story I could relate to as I saw James Brown perform many times while in college in the early 60s in Washington, D.C. and subsequently directed him in a television special in the fall of 1968, encouraging young people to go back to school. We wanted to find footage and audio elements that accurately portrayed what happened that day in Boston and elsewhere during those awful days following Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination. In the process, we found materials that had not been seen or heard since they were created in 1988. We are very proud of this film and the responses we have received from those who lived in those times

With Australia at war in Vietnam in 1967, suddenly Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared without a trace—an event unparalleled in the history of western democracy. Four decades after Harold Holt’s bizarre disappearance at Cheviot Beach, a coronial inquiry confirmed that he had accidentally drowned. Some people may still believe that Holt was a spy and fled to China in a submarine. But most suspect that there was more to his disappearance than has ever been revealed. Reconstructed from eyewitness accounts, this dramatised documentary investigates all aspects of the mysterious case and asks why the nation’s leader entered such violent surf that day. Do gaps in the police investigation and recently discovered classified documents suggest an answer?

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Use of archival footage has been interwoven with dramatised recreations to provide a though-provoking and entertaining documentary. The documentary attracted 1.2 million viewers when it screened last month and its truely a unique and thought-provoking documentary

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

For most Canadians, World War II was a devastating was happening overseas. However, by the fall of 1942, German U-boats were also reeking havoc closer to home, in the St. Lawrence Gulf and River. Twenty-one ships were torpedoed and sunk by the enemy, killing more than 240 people. A German spy had landed and then another. The first was apprehended within 24 hours, the second gave himself up following one year of debauchery; neither completed any Nazi spy work. But the really surprising tale was revealed by a German scientiest who, 35 years after the fact, accidentally discovered that enemy U-boats had landed and installed a weather station in Labrador, Canada.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

These obscure Canadian was stories are skilfully intertwined, combining archival footage and photographs with HD filming. More than 80 different sources were contacted in the quest for specific and little known archives. Amazing footage of German soldiers setting up a weather station in Spitzbergen during the Second World War, as well as close-up footage of Nazi soldiers manipulating a machine gun were rare finds. An extraordinary journalistic collection of photographs of the German weather station in Canada compliments the narration of this dramatic voyage and installation. Diligent combing of various World War II archives contributed much dramatic submarine footage, and other archives, public and private, provided pertinent footage of the times.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

“Nothing you read, nothing you were told about it, prepares you for actually being on the ground in Belfast on a day when there’s rioting, on a day when there’s bombs going off, absolutely nothing in my life prepared me for that.” So says Sir Trevor McDonald. In the course of the programme, which weaves together archive footage with recent interviews, some of the biggest names in News and Current Affairs reporting including Kate Adie, Martin Bell Michael Brunson and Peter Taylor reflect on the stories, the people, the places they most vividly remember from their coverage of the Troubles.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

This programme sees present day interviews with major names in network News and Current Affairs reporting used alongside archive footage from various sources to illustrate their time and experiences in Northern Ireland during The Troubles. We see Martin Bell reporting from the middle of a fierce firefight in Belfast. Nick Ross is seen being interviewed while studying at Queens where he was involved in the Civil Rights movement. Peter Taylor’s revelation that he first set foot in Northern Ireland on Bloody Sunday is illustrated with UTV footage of the violence of that day.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Marking the 2008 centenary of Alistair Cooke's birth, this documentary is a revealing portrait of one of the most celebrated broadcasters of the 20th Century. Cooke’s story is told through his extraordinary 8mm home movies shot from 1933 onwards – a chance to see America as Cooke first saw it. Some of the most fascinating material was filmed during his close friendship with Charlie Chaplin, and is among the most candid footage ever shot of the star. Using Cooke’s own words and interviews with family and close friends – including legendary actress Lauren Bacall – we discover the unseen Alistair Cooke.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The Unseen Alistair Cooke uses newly discovered home movie archive shot by Cooke. The narrative of the film was led by this archive, allowing us to explore unusual areas of Cooke's biography, and connect the visual “raw material” with his later journalistic work. There is testimony from many of those who themselves appear in the movies. A sympathetic graphic frame was devised, allowing 4x3 material to be shown without cropping. Library footage from BBC and outside suppliers was integrated with material from Cooke and his son, but the graphic frames help to distinguish material shot by Cooke from other footage.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Is America facing an even greater threat to its economy than the meltdown of its banking system? David Walker, the former Comptroller General of the United States believes that his country is about to drown in an ocean of debt. He's so concerned that he quit his job to raise public awareness on the issue. He believes his message to be the financial equivalent of former president Al Gore's warning about the environment, An Inconvenient Truth. The statistics are staggering, with the US Government debt running at more than ten trillion dollars and set to rise and rise unless policy changes. And with many people urging new President Barack Obama to spend his way out of recession, it may be that the underlying weakness of the American economy can only get worse.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The use of archive powerfully underlines the epic scale of the current economic crisis that America faces. Archive footage connects this crisis with fundamental economic developments of the past century to show the true context of an unfolding contemporary story. The use of archive delivers humour and illumination to the exposition of a current hot issue.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The explorer, writer and broadcaster Benedict Allen retraces some of Laurie Lee's journey across Spain which he made in 1936 when he was 19 years old, and which he wrote about thirty years later in ‘As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning’

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Using footage shot in 1963 and 1969 (by the BBC for a programme that was never made) of Lee retracing his own footsteps we have a remarkable record of a writer and poet polishing and refining his own words and ideas thirty years after the event. We were able to identify some of the exact filming positions the original crew had used and could match the shots precisely, with Allen retracing Lee’s exact footsteps. We interwove the old footage with Benedict’s journey, thus enabling the programme to work on many layers Because of the close relationship we developed with Kathy Lee, Laurie’s widow, we were given access to hitherto unseen archive – photographs, paintings, Laurie Lee’s notebooks. All these added to the rich, multi-layered texture of the programme.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Lleisiau'r Rhyfel Mawr (Voices of the Great War) tells the story of the Great War for the first time, in the words of Welshmen who fought in it. 80% of the material quoted has never been published since the war, and is carefully interwovaen with stills from private collections, county archives, the National Library of Wales and footage from Imperial War Museum.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Its eclectic use of archive footage stands comparison with the plethora of productions which have marked the 90th anniversary. War is not just about battles and the front line - it changes people's lives and Lleisiau'r Rhyfel Mawr use of footage tries to capture that breadth of experience.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

World War I was a hallucination that triggered off the modern era: mass war, chemical war, manipulation of the masses, de-personalization of individuals. A huge number of soldiers dwelled in the hell of the trenches. Never-ending bombings coming from the artilleries, chemical bombs, death lotteries. They suffered from unknown disease, named shellshock. The psychiatrists of the time chose therapies which could send the soldiers back to the front as soon as possible. With the help of historians and rare footage, the documentary investigates the relationship between the ill ones and psychiatry, using the diaries of the combatants and the case-sheets.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

This documentary film is the result of a long and fertile work of a research équipe, which intended to unravel the story of a hidden disease, shellshock. The images and, most of all, the stories told by the images found are rare or unseen or unheard. They are coming from archives all over Europe. A special work of research has been done on case sheets, which have been found in Italian mental hospitals. Materials have been searched concerning the psychiatric treatment, for example, in French hospitals. All of these materials contribute in finally building up a clear picture of the bondage between war, mental illness and psychiatry during War World I.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The programme gives a first hand account of the tragic and brutal death of nine Irish UN peacekeeping soldiers in the Niemba ambush in 1960. It features the first-hand account of one Irish survivor, Joe Fitzpatrick. It details how an eleven-man Irish patrol was ambushed by Baluba tribesmen at a river crossing. Over 100 Baluba approached the patrol armed with arrows, knives, spears and clubs. Under a shower of arrows the soldiers ran for cover with the Balubas in pursuit. Some were hit by the hail of arrows and some were bludgeoned to death as they lay wounded. The Niemba Ambush remains the greatest loss of life in Irish military history. The story unfolds through a combination of one-to-one interviews, and a wealth of archive footage, some of which is being broadcast for the first time.It includes material from the Irish Military Archive, the private archive of Colonel Michael Moriarty as well as the archives of the Irish language body Gael Linn and of the national broadcaster RTÉ.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Ireland has a distinguished record of peace-keeping overseas. This programme through contemporary interviews interwoven with a wealth of archive materials brings a fascinating but often forgotten aspect of Irish history alive and one which resonates even to today.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Paul Clark embarks upon a personal journey around Ireland to examine the changing attitudes to remembering the war dead in We Will Remember Them. Remembering the First World War divided Ireland even before partition. The twists and turns of Irish history across the entire island have complicated remembrance. In places, the medals, along with the memories, were put into shoe boxes and left in the attic. But, now, with a better understanding of the reasons why unionist and nationalist soldiers went to war – and the passage of time – the boxes and the memories are being opened up.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Paul Clark said: “The changing attitude in Ireland is about more than the passage of time. The new maturing island is more comfortable with remembrance. All shades of opinion have found common ground in France and Flanders, where these men died in their thousands. Now, at last, they are finding common ground back home in Ireland – on both sides of the border.”

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

When We Left Earth is the story of mankind's greatest adventure, leaving the earth and living in space. For the first time this series has digitally re-mastered the original film and audio recordings from NASA's vaults, including and all the key on-board footage filmed by the astronauts themselves. From John Glenn's Mercury mission to orbit the earth, to Neil Armstrong's first historic steps on the moon, to the unprecedented spacewalks required to repair the Hubble telescope, these epic stories are shown in stunning clarity and told by the astronauts and engineers who were there.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

“When we Left Earth” is a landmark series, recounting the history of space exploration through archive and interviews. This series afforded a rare opportunity to return to the original NASA 16mm films, retransferring 120hrs of footage to High Definition. Not only was this feat logistically difficult but also required the vision of an experienced film research department to make intelligent selections as to what footage to transfer from the vast amount available.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Joseph Stalin was a tyrant responsible for the death of millions – yet he was also a vital ally of Britain and America’s during the Second World War. How was it possible for Churchill and Roosevelt to deal with one tyrant – Joseph Stalin – in order to help beat another – Adolf Hitler? The series uses dramatic reconstructions – based on extensive fresh research in Russian and Western archives – and extraordinary testimony from witnesses of the time, including former Soviet secret policemen who have not spoken before on camera, in order to tell a ‘Behind Closed Doors’ history.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

For the drama reconstruction we wanted to give it an archival feel, so we used a sepia diffusion filter to give the material a slightly de-saturated semi-sepia tint, defusing the highlights to provide depth of field. Much of the rich genuine archive material was in black in white, such as interviews with Allied seamen who reveal how they braved the Arctic convoys and with Red Army veterans, who talk on how they killed Germans in hand-to-hand fighting on the Eastern Front. We gave this material a sepia tone and the documentary footage was graded to bring out the best in the source material.
