Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
Baghdad Twist is a visual memoir of one family’s life in Iraq before escaping to a new home in Canada in the fall of 1970. Featuring a never-before-seen collection of archival images, home movies and family photographs from Baghdad, the film pulls back the curtain on Iraq’s once thriving Jewish community, its perilous final years and its remarkable ability to find solace in the shadow of fear. |
Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words): |
Due to the inclusion of imagery (super-8 and photography) from private collections of those who were in Iraq during that period, this is a very special opportunity to see footage otherwise impossible to find. Added to this is imagery from archives that were able to dovetail with the personal nature of this film. It is easier to find newsreel-type footage of this or other periods which mark those political moments of upheaval; more difficult is to create a personal film that speaks to the universal by starting with an intimate viewing of the family photo album. Lost fragments of a life that no longer exists - the epitome of the power of archival imagery. |

Blindness Feature film Rhombus Media Inc. http://www.rhombusmedia.com/ An independent producer of close to two hundred films and television specials finished work on movie Blindness, starring Julianne Moore and Mark Ruffalo as a couple who live in a city that is plagued with a "white blindness" epidemic. It comes from Nobel Prize winning author Jose Saramago and acclaimed director Fernando Meirelles (“The Constant Gardener,” “City of God”). Footage provided by TVDATA Library http://tvdata.ru/eng/index.php was captured by CCTV camera in Moscow Lefortovo tunnel known as «Tunnel of death». The shot picturing a large passenger bus loosing control was successfully incorporated in the movie in compliance with the whole film conception. |
Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words): |
Footage request came via focal and producer was quite picky and I find it a very interesting assignment because the idea of the film to show that the country is suddenly getting blind and they wanted to have the moment of a car crash being caught on the camera to illustrate that a driver is getting blind . you would not find so many clips which can show actual moment of crash, but in we at TVDATA Russian Stock Footage company posses the CCTV footage which was filmed directly in the tunnel which is considered to be the longest and deadliest tunnel in the city and is known as tunnel of death http://www.tvdata.ru/shocking/crash_lefortovo_tunnel |

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
“Bucharest” is a documentary about memory. From within a double exile, it follows the personal pursuit of Albert (a journalist born in exile in 1962) to recuperate his own roots. His father, the Spanish politician Jordi Solé Tura, who became a key figure during the Spanish Transition, was obliged to go into exile toward the end of the 1950s for his militant anti-Franco beliefs. Now, after living a life replete with passionate personal and political experiences, Jordi has begun to enter a new, internal exile, this time with no possibility of returning: a fight against Alzheimer’s Disease. Every day, his memory slips further away. With this film, Albert will resurrect the memory not only of his father’s atypical life, but also that of other historical Spanish figures such as Santiago Carrillo, Jorge Semprún and the ex-president of Catalonia Jordi Pujol, and little known episodes in the fight against Franco’s dictatorship and the Cold War. For Albert, many of these experiences are the diffuse recollections of a child. He will travel from one exile to another, trying to recompose the memory of his family, his own memory. |

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
After the split of Czechoslovakia in 1992, former political dissident, leader of the Velvet Revolution, playwright and essayist Vaclav Havel became the first president of a new country, the Czech Republic. Thus it came to pass that a former enemy of the state was actually given the popular mandate to transform that state and its institutions. Such events are not commonplace so, from day one, he permitted his friend, filmmaker Pavel Koutecky, to be with him, to capture as much of it as possible, whether in the Prague Castle or around the world. The result is CITIZEN HAVEL, a feature-length documentary of never-before-seen footage that provides an intimate look at a man thrust into the spotlight of international politics and celebrity, trying to maintain a balance between public and personal life while bringing his nation out of its communist past and into a free, democratic future. |

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
The Spanish Civil War made a great impression on the lives of most of the American artists of the 20th Century. Lots of films were made in Hollywood referring to this event, and the defeat of the Democratic Spain let an “open wound” in the heart of liberal actors, directors and screenwriters. The coherent life of screenwriter Alvah Bessie is our track through this feeling. From his fighting in Spain with the Abraham Lincoln Brigades in 1937 to his return to Spain 30 years later, where he was required to write his only film after being blacklisted as one of the “Hollywood Ten”.This is an original approach to one of the most controversial subjects of our times: the relationship between film industry and politics. |
Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words): |
“A War in Hollywood” is the result of an extensive research process that involved locating archival footage from over 30 different sources. These include North American newsreels, Spanish No-Do’s and films held by the Catalan Film Library. The most relevant films excerpted in our film are the well-known documentaries, “The Spanish Earth”, “Heart of Spain”, “Defenders of the Faith” and “Franco, ese hombre”. 125 photographs and other carefully-selected documents on the Spanish Civil War, brigade members, artists, etc. also help to illustrate our story. The almost 50 clips from Hollywood films selected deserve a special mention. The excerpts are used at times as archival footage and at times in order to analyze the political significance of certain movies. This combination also raises questions regarding reality and its formal representation through film. |

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
Charlotte of Luxembourg was a wife and mother of six children; she was also a wartime propagandist for the Allies. Léif Lëtzebuerger *aka Charlotte: A Royal at War tells the remarkable untold story of the Royal “propagandist in pearls” who inspired a nation through the power of radio, reaching her people in their darkest hour. Charlotte’s broadcasts on the BBC were a “lifeline of hope” for Luxembourgers, as they suffered under brutal occupation by Hitler’s Third Reich. The film reveals a powerful truth: ordinary people will endure hardship, imprisonment - even death, if they have someone to believe in, to keep their hopes alive. |
Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words): |
Léif Lëtzebuerger *aka Charlotte: A Royal at War makes extensive use of colour and black & white film archive, much of it previously not broadcast, until now. We secured exclusive access to personal recordings from the Luxembourg Royal Family’s own private archives; also, colour cine-film from several amateur camera operators in Luxembourg and the US. Several key contributors were speaking publicly for the first and only time about their wartime experiences, 70 years ago Indeed since completing the film, 4 contributors have since passed away. Our film provides a unique, detailed and emotionally engaging filmic record of a critical period in the life of Europe’s smallest democracy. |

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
For six months in 1919, Paris was the capital of the world. The last shots had just been fired in the most devastating war of all time – and the old global order lay in tatters. Delegations from over 30 nations urgently descended upon Paris for the most ambitious peace talks in history. Their goal was to draft a peace treaty “for all time”, creating instead an embittered Germany already dreaming of retaliation – and contentious new entities like Iraq and Yugoslavia. In a compelling story that blends re-enactments with archival images, director Paul Cowan captures the dramatic cut-and-thrust of diplomacy, while evoking the extraordinary atmosphere of a metropolis returning to life. |
Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words): |
PARIS 1919 is a feature length docudrama that seamlessly blends archival film footage and stills – some rarely seen before – with dramatic re-enactments to capture the mood and intensity of the peace talks after WWI. The stock footage, researched and viewed at the beginning of the creative development of the film, informed the writing and direction of the film, and plays a critical part in establishing the authenticity and drama of the film. |

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
The epic story of a family forced to emigrate from Laos after the chaos of the secret air war waged by the U.S. during the Vietnam War. Kuras has spent the last 23 years chronicling the family's extraordinary journey in this deeply personal, poetic, and emotional film.
A Lao prophecy says, "A time will come when the universe will break, piece by piece, the world will change beyond what we know." That time came for the small country of Laos with the clandestine involvement of the United States during the Vietnam War. By 1973, three million tons of bombs had been dropped on Laos in the fight to overcome the North Vietnamese, more than the total used during both world wars. With the rise of a Communist government in Laos, killings and arrests became common among those affiliated with the former government and the Americans. Families were torn apart-some finally emigrating to the U.S. In a collaboration spanning more than 20 years, Ellen Kuras works with Laotian co-director Thavisouk Phrasavath, the main subject of the film. Phrasavath takes us through his youth, his escape from persecution and arrest in Laos, his family's reunion and their journey as immigrants to America, and the second war they had to fight on the streets of New York City. Drawing on the techniques of experimental film and the traditions of Laotian culture, Nerakhoon (The Betrayal) is a tale about a country, a family, and a young man who discovers the power and resilience of the human spirit. |

Film director Luc Bourdon has assembled an extraordinary mosaic of stock footage to create the musical, impressionistic, award-winning feature film The Memories of Angels. Documentary, poetry and essay rolled into one, this film is a discovery of the great city of Montreal in the 1950s and early 1960s. This voyage in time takes us from the red light district to the harbours and textile factories with the music of such luminaries as Igor Stravinsky and Oscar Peterson. Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words): |
Trouble the Water takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen. Winner of the 2008 Sundance Grand Jury Prize, the film features Kimberly and Scott Roberts, a young couple living on the margins who survive the flooding of their city by any means necessary, recording their experience in a chilling video diary which opens the film. Weaving fly on the wall and in-your-face filmmaking with home video footage and archival news, directors Tia Lessin and Carl Deal tell a redemptive tale of two unforgettable people who are surviving not only failed levees, bungling bureaucrats, armed soldiers, but also their own past. |
Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words): |
We are submitting to recognize the expert usage of news footage and other media - the chillingly resigned 911 calls for help that won't come -- which punctuate the very personal story and at the same time tell the broader story of what happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. One of the many storytelling challenges we faced was that while Kimberly had filmed incredibly intimate, jarring footage and brilliant real-time commentary of Hurricane Katrina, her battery died soon after the levees broke. We had to dig deep into other collections of Katrina footage to find the POV-style video to match the raw emotional intensity of Kim’s and Scott’s footage, and weave them together to tell the complete story of their journey out of the city. |
