Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

The Battle of the Somme is one of the most successful British films ever made and gave its 1916 audience an unprecedented insight into the realities of trench warfare, controversially including the depiction of dead and wounded soldiers. As a pioneering battlefield documentary, its very concept outraged commentators on its release, inaugurating a debate about the on-screen depiction of combat that continues to this day. Its use of a staged sequence to represent the opening of the assault also set the scene for continuing controversy about the ‘truth’ of the documentary format.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

The Imperial War Museum’s DVD release of The Battle of the Somme is more than the presentation of a fine digital restoration of a documentary of international importance- it recreates the cinematic power of a film that mesmerised audiences in 1916. With the choice of two musical soundtracks and a host of contextualising extras, this DVD excites scholars and researchers but it has also received praise from non-specialist publications and websites, showing that the film has been made accessible to those drawn to it through their deeply felt personal connections to the battle and the memory of the Great War.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

From the early days of clockwork cameras to the latest High Definition technologies, WildFilmHistory is an online guide to the pioneering people, landmark productions and technical innovation behind one hundred years of wildlife films. Explore the history and heritage of wildlife filmmaking and discover ground-breaking films, ‘behind the scenes’ photographs, essential production information, as well as a unique collection of oral histories from key industry people. Although a popular TV genre, wildlife films are often only shown once or twice before being archived by broadcasters or forgotten by individuals. WildFilmHistory’s aim is to make this material available again, to as wide an audience as possible.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

WildFilmHistory is a resource designed and managed by Wildscreen, a UK charity working to promote conservation and an appreciation of biodiversity through wildlife imagery. Promoting the resources available on WildFilmHistory is a crucial part of the organisation’s awareness-raising mission. We believe that winning a Focal Award would help us in our quest to raise the profile of WildFilmHistory and encourage more people to learn about the natural world. We would also like to recognise and celebrate a resource that has received archive footage from so many organisations and individuals across the industry.
