Working closely in collaboration on this ambitious project, the BFI National Archive and ITV Global Entertainment (formerly Granada International) have ensured that future generations will enjoy these classic films in their best possible form. The condition of the original material was poor, with physical damage, deterioration, mould and missing frames being some of the problems encountered. Six titles were photochemically restored (with sections of "Blithe Spirit" and "This Happy Breed" requiring digital restoration) prior to being transferred and further restored in High Definition. Materials on "Brief Encounter" and "In Which We Serve" were so compromised that they were selected for full digital intermediate restoration.

With the aid of a supporting cast of those who participated in the making of the film, the late Lionel Rogosin tells the story of how he penetrated the sealed township of Sophiatown, Johannesburg during the iron rule of the apartheid regime. In what sometimes develops like a political thriller, he tells how he fooled the regime into believing he was shooting a harmless travelogue only to emerge with one of the most damning portrayals of lives lived under pressure of a police state.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Jerry Kuehl brought this competition to our attention. This film and our series of films are made to restore the films and the reputation of an important but neglected Independent American filmmaker. It would be a great help and support to win a competition, which is based on archival work. We have tried to make an film which works on many levels and delves into ideas, politics and film making itself. We have used the restored clips and unseen footage from the filming as well as archiving sound data and photos from our archives.

It was broadcast on June 11 1973 as part of the Music Makers series. The magic in this documentary lies in, how it provides both an insight to Gallagher’s passion for music and a snapshot of seventies Irish youth culture. Thanks to dedicated efforts by the RTÉ Film Preservation and Restoration Unit they have saved this gem from the critical list and preserved it for future fans.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

World-renowned Irish blues/rock guitarist Rory Gallagher (1948 – 1995) would have been 60 years old this year. RTÉ’s Library and Archives identified and restored an episode from the seventies “Music Makers” to celebrate this anniversary and collaborated with RTÉ’s Archive Production Unit for its re-transmission in 2008. “Music Makers” was broadcast in tandem with a second restored archive documentary “Rory Gallagher: Me and My Music” (1977) on October 27 2008 on RTE1. Both programmes received a lot of press attention and attracted a large share of the audience. The broadcast coincided with UNESCO World Audio Visual Day.

Title of Production/Series cited:

Restoration of Kinora reels from circa 1911

Company / Facility House

The R&A Archive / Blue Post Production

Country of Origin of cited work:

UK

First Transmission / Publication Date:

December 2008

Where published (Channel/Website):

R&A Archive / IMG Media Archive website

Programme Duration (Mins):

Approx 30 seconds per reel

Series number episodes:

4

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Kinora reels were based on the same principles as the Mutoscope. Patented by the Lumiere brothers in 1896, they were first marketed in Britain in 1902 as a moving image system for home use. Each reel held up to 640 images and ran for about 30 seconds. The marketing of Kinora reels in 1911 stressed their use for studying sporting techniques and particularly those of golfers. When shown in sequence, the three restored George Duncan reels represent one of the earliest forms of golf instruction by moving images currently known. This makes them immensely significant to golf and film historians.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

A special rig with a rostrum camera was built to hold the Kinora reel safely. Each individual slide of each reel was then photographed at high resolution. These photographs were treated as frames of video and arranged into the correct order to produce approximately 30 seconds of footage for each reel. The images then went through the painstaking processes of stabilisation and frame-by-frame digital restoration. This restoration project has made it possible for a wide public to view these reels with a pictorial quality not seen since the early 20th century.
