As an innovative on-line competition, hosted by Channel 4, which enabled a wide-ranging audience to view a selection of public information films, first produced in the 1940s and 50s, and then re-interpret them around modern issues. 4 winning entrants worked with Mosaic Films to produce short films transmitted on Channel 4 in the Three Minute Wonder slot in May 2008. These new films are now deposited in the BFI National Archive alongside the original footage that inspired them.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

When Jay-Z was confirmed to perform at Glastonbury there was a furor in the press, particularly from Noel Gallagher from Oasis. He said hip hop would never work at Glastonbury. We were contracted to make a You-Tube type archive mash up to introduce Jay-Z just before he came on stage. It was to give the illusion that world leaders and celebrities were commenting on the decision, inter cut with Noel’s comments from BBC Radio and talking heads we filmed ourselves. It was a remarkable success.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

From initial idea to delivering the film took three days. Straight to master for the archive materials, over 20 hours of footage and about three hours sleep a night! It was edited over a period of 24 hours direct into an on-line. It subsequently made international headlines all over the world. “There's a gripping intro film that juxtaposes Noel Gallagher's pronouncements of doom regarding the rapper's suitability for Glastonbury … there's no denying its rabble-rousing qualities” – The Guardian "Jay-Z's intro tape was great, wasn't it? Noel can take it, they're tough fellas, aren't they? They used to work on a building site, didn't they?” – Michael Eavis

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

Rhondda Lives! is a Valleys Kids Project, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund, BBC Wales and the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales. When people see places they recognise on a screen, memories flood back, and stories demand to be told. Valleys Kids wondered what would happen if those reactions could be captured and made into new, screenable material. In the vaults of BBC Wales and the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales lies footage from the last 80 years or so. A partnership was formed, Valleys Kids secured funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund and researchers dug through the records to find material showing the Rhondda.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

We feel it's a great example of publicly-funded archive being released and used by individuals in a facilitated way to illustrate their own personal stories while learning valuable new media literacy skills.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

ROLLIN’ ON is a film about Skateboarding, hard work and perseverance. The film tells the story of a group of young people who regularly meet at Finsbury Park skate-park. Its main narrative is given by an interview with legendary skateboarding champion Tony Hawk, in which he tells the story of his first rolling steps into the world of skateboarding and how much skateboarding contributed to changing his life from bullied shy boy and outsider to revered professional skateboarding champion and video game character. The film draws a parallel between the lives of the young skateboarders in Haringey and their hero and hopefully will prove very inspirational among viewers. The film touches on themes such as bulling at school, social barriers and prejudice, as well as investigating weather skateboarding could offer a viable alternative to gun, knives, street crime in general and boredom.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

Many teen agers have been killed by teen agers during 2008 in London. Rollin’ On offers an alternative to violence and tells the story of a group of young skateboarders and features the legendary Tony Hawk. It looks at skateboarding as a viable alternative to guns, street crime and boredom.

Brief Synopsis in English (up to 100 words):

This video is a celebration of peace and the universal human desire to achieve it. Black and white performance footage of the artist is integrated with recent and archival footage and photos of people demonstrating peace. Political leaders and celebrities, as well as average citizens are mixed together to show that everyone is striving for the same thing. While the lyrics speak to a world in need of salvation, the tone of the video is hopeful and exuberant, demonstrating that change is possible if we come together as one world to seek a common goal.

Reason for submission in English (up to 150 words):

We are submitting this video because the use of stock footage is integral to the storytelling. While part of the video is original footage, the main theme is a coming together of people from varying backgrounds and roles in the world all striving for peace. This is communicated through the use of archive, newsreel, and event footage. The use of recognizable imagery set to music to make statements is perfectly demonstrated in this video.
