Blue Planet snapped up by Mountain Dew

A single scene from the award-winning BBC series The Blue Planet has become the cornerstone of a major television advertising campaign created by major US advertising agency BBDO, on behalf of soft drink brand Mountain Dew.

The scene, in which a humpback whale surges out of the ocean and traps a fish in its mouth, was one of the most enduring images from the landmark BBC series. In the commercial, which opens with a kayaker drinking a can of Mountain Dew, a 15-second segment of the scene was manipulated to show the whale swallowing him whilst leaping to get at his drink. The effect is seamless and powerful, and the spot has a surprise ending.

The campaign, initiated through Susan Nickerson Research, also included six shots from other BBC Natural History Unit material, which was crafted together to merge the licensable footage with the new live-action material.

Mark Fricker, Commercial Director, BBC Library Sales, said, "This is a perfect example of how BBC footage can be used in the most creative ways for almost any kind of production project. We're continually impressed by the creative ways in which our footage is used by our clients and their agencies."
