News wins International Emmy
Coverage of the recent Iraq war earned
Channel 4 News an International Emmy
in New York last night. The prestigious
gong is a terrific mark of international
recognition for programme's foreign
coverage over the past year and was
dedicated to Channel 4 News' Gaby
Rado and all the other journalists
who lost their lives covering the
conflict.
The entry was a compilation entitled
'The Fall of Saddam', covering 6 days
in April beginning with the fall of
Saddam's 'statue'. This included a
piece by Lindsey Hilsum on 'statue
day' and a film by Nicholas Glass
on Saddam's reign - both on the 9th
April. On the 10th, Lindsey reported
on the shooting of a young girl by
US Marines hunting Saddam. On Sunday
13th, Mark Easton interviewed Gailan
Ramiz, a political scientist at Baghdad
University, reflecting one week after
Saddam had gone, and finally, a piece
by Lindsey Hilsum inside Abu Ghraib
jail in Baghdad with former prisoners.
An award of this nature cannot be
won without acknowledging the team
who made it possible. Particular recognition
goes to Lindsey Hilsum, Tim Lambon,
Paul Eedle, Mohammed Fatnan, Yusuf
al-Taie, Nicholas Glass, Teresa Smith,
Fiona Tomlinson, Mike Borer, Margaret
John, Soren Munk and Mark Easton.
Commenting on this achievement, Channel
4 News Editor, Jim Gray said:
"Winning the Emmy is a terrific
mark of international recognition
following a period in which Channel
4 News has been on its strongest ever
form. And the range of items in our
winning entry demonstrates our undoubted
strength in depth - from location
reporting and revelatory journalism
to film making and interviewing. Congratulations
of course go to all those who contributed,
and more broadly my thanks go to the
best team in the business (I may be
biased, but I'm also right)".
Dorothy Byrne, Acting Head, News and
Current Affairs, Channel 4 added,
"I am delighted that Channel
Four News' outstanding coverage of
the War in Iraq has received the international
recognition it deserves".
