• Introduction to moving images – a historical overview
• Nature of film – composition, format, how it works
• History of film technology
• Types of film – negatives, positives, soundtracks, colour etc
• The film production process – shooting, cutting, post-production, release etc
• Principles of video
• History of video and electronic formats
• Production using video
• Identifying film and video in a collection
• Managing film and video in the archive – masters, duplication etc
• Repair and restoration
• Ethical questions – colour, speed, sound, grain, versions etc
• Access to archive material – the digital future

All the above will include practical experience giving students the opportunity to see the different types of film and tape and associated equipment.

1400 Welcome by Linda Reeve, Head of Sales and Marketing Robin James UK Sales Manager will give an overview of BBC Motion Gallery and include examples of workflow from receiving the footage request, researching the catalogue, clearing the rights and all aspects to completion of the request.

1500 Afternoon Tea

1515 Award winning producer will give an overview of producing archive based programmes and show a few examples. Discuss the problems of obtaining footage etc.

1700 Wrap up of the main part of the training week by Sue Malden, Anne Johnson and Julie Lewis with a preview of the FOCAL International Awards
