The FOCAL International Awards 2011

The FOCAL International Awards 2011 in association with AP Archive were presented 11th May 2011 at the Lancaster London Hotel, London by Greg Dyke, Patron FOCAL International.


Footage is considered to consist of moving images and so productions consisting predominantly of stills will not be considered in the same way by the Jury.

General Advice from the Jury:

Depending on the category and the topic, the Judges will be looking for examples of work where library footage is central to the success of the production or it has given it an added value; where archival footage has helped the understanding of the topic or illustrated it in a way that words alone could not do; where innovative use of footage has managed to portray a topic in a unique way. Judges will also consider the efforts that have been made to find new and / or appropriate footage and to ensure that the material is presented in the best possible visual quality. The criteria are deliberately loose, as the good productions this year may suggest themselves in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons.

Jerry Kuehl, our Head Juror adds: ‘In the category devoted to Factual programming we also consider: 1) Does what is seen on the screen match what the commentary or interviews say? 2) Is the programme’s narration factually accurate? 3) Is the use of footage historically accurate? 4) How novel or unfamiliar is the archive material?'

Footage Library Employee of the Year

Recipient An individual member of staff working for a FOCAL International Footage Library Member who has shown outstanding skill and dedication in the service of archive cataloguing and preservation, or, who has provided a particularly good service in supplying content to users.

Best Use of Footage in a Factual Production

Includes History, Current Affairs, Factual Docudramas for television broadcast.
Recipient - A production team from a broadcasting or production company that has produced a named production in which the footage content has been used intelligently. This may include, for example, a traditional methodology but beautifully put together work using footage, or an innovative approach to the use of archive footage. The criteria is deliberately loose, as the good productions this year may suggest themselves in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons. The award should go to the team involved, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by the Director or Producer. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Use of Footage in an Entertainment or Drama Production

Includes list and blooper type programmes, humorous use of wildlife footage, comedy sketch series etc.
Recipient - A production team from a broadcasting or production company that has produced a named production in which the footage content has been used intelligently. This may include, for example, a traditional methodology but beautifully put together work using footage, or an innovative approach to the use of archive footage. The criteria is deliberately loose, as the good productions this year may suggest themselves in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons. The award should go to the team involved, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by the Director or Producer. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Use of Footage in an Arts Production

Includes programmes featuring any of the arts, literature, musicians, architecture etc.
Recipient - A production team from a broadcasting or production company that has produced a named production in which the footage content has been used intelligently. This may include, for example, a traditional methodology but beautifully put together work using footage, or an innovative approach to the use of archive footage. The criteria is deliberately loose, as the good productions this year may suggest themselves in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons. The award should go to the team involved, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by the Director or Producer. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Use of Footage in an Arts Production featuring Music

This may include, for example, a traditional methodology but beautifully put together work using footage, or an innovative approach to the use of archive footage. The criteria is deliberately loose, as the good productions this year may suggest themselves in a variety of ways and for a variety of reasons. The award should go to the team involved, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by the Director or Producer. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Use of Footage in a Short Production

Made for any media platform. Includes Advertisements, Trailers, Pop Promos and Shorts made for any media platform TV, cinema, online etc.
Recipient - Creative team and, or, advertising agency, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by a Director and production company who have made the best use of library footage in the cited advertisement. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Use of Wildlife and Natural History Footage

Made for any media platform. Includes use of footage of animals, plants and the physical world made for any platform.
Recipient Creative team, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by a Director and production company who have made the best use of library footage in the cited production. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Use of Footage on Non-television Platforms

Includes websites and any on-line productions, museums, exhibition, theatres, concerts, festivals etc.
Recipient Creative team, including the Footage Researcher(s), where the footage has been used on a website, mobile phone, CD ROM, DVD, IPTV or any similar non-broadcast television production. Supporting visual material, including web link where applicable, is required.

Best Use of Footage in a Home Entertainment Release

Includes sell through DVDs and giveaways.
Recipient Creative team, including the Footage Researcher(s). Supporting visual material, including web link where applicable, is required. This Award is essentially aimed at productions that were principally designed for first release on a home video format, but the jury will consider submissions of a production that has previously been released on another platform where it can be demonstrated that the home video release is distinct from the original releases and/or where there is notable added value in terms of packaging, extra features, well presented menus and navigation.

Best Use of Footage in a Cinema Release

Includes any feature film or feature length documentary which goes on general cinema release to the public. It is not intended for productions which are launched at festival cinemas without then going on general cinema release.
Recipient Production team, including the Footage Researcher(s), headed by a Director and production company who have made the best use of library footage in a production released in cinemas. Supporting visual material is required.

Best Archive Restoration Project

Whole projects on collections will be considered separately to individual titles and the best awarded accordingly.
Recipient A library and/ or technical facility which has invested in any aspect of restoration or preservation of archive moving image content. Supporting visual material is required e.g. restoration work in progress, the complete restored work plus before and after shots if possible. NB. You will be asked to include a statement which explains:
1. The element(s) used for restoration, stating gauge and nature and specific problems associated with them.
2. Original aspect ratio and format.
3. Restored aspect ratio and format.
4 Where the work was carried out for each title, (including labs and facility houses) and broken down where there are multiple titles in an entry.
5. What methodology was used.
6. What preservation elements have been generated and where they will be stored.

Best Archive Restoration Title

The Jane Mercer Footage Researcher of the Year Award

Recipient An individual Footage Researcher (or team) who is/are a Member(s) of FOCAL International and who is/are primarily responsible for the footage research for a production or productions premiered during the qualifying year. Nominations can be submitted online or the Jury may propose additional names during the course of the Jury process. A special peer group committee will choose the recipient. They will be looking for an individual or team who in the previous year has/have displayed some or all of the following qualities: a depth of knowledge; tenacity; thoroughness; accuracy in factual productions, imagination and an ability to enhance and protect the integrity of archive and stock footage.
NB. All Nominees will be asked to provide a list of their credits for 2010 and a statement from a relevant Producer / Director in support of the nomination.

Footage Library Employee of the Year

Recipient An individual member of staff working for a FOCAL International Footage Library Member who has shown outstanding skill and dedication in the service of archive cataloguing and preservation, or, who has provided a particularly good service in supplying content to users.

Footage Library of the Year

Recipient A FOCAL International Footage Library Member for providing a particularly good service in supplying content or introducing an innovative library management project or other beneficial innovation. Good service could be measured in terms of the online operation and/or the personal level of interaction with clients. The Award will go to the library receiving the most popular vote from FOCAL International Researcher members.

Lifetime Achievement

Recipient - Anyone who has performed a minimum of 25 years service in the archive industry and is recognized in a general sense to have contributed to the promotion, good practice or understanding of the content industry. Anyone can submit the name of a person supported by a statement as to why they feel the said person should be considered for this Award which is a gift of the FOCAL International Executive. NB. All Nominees will need to provide a personal CV in support of the nomination.
