UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage to be celebrated at BAFTA

15 October 2009

BAFTA will host this year's FOCAL International celebration of UNESCO World Audiovisual Archive Day on Monday 26th October at 18.00 - 20.30.

In 2007 the first official UNESCO World Day for Audiovisual Heritage (27th Oct) was launched. This date has now been designated an annual event by UNESCO. The establishment of the UNESCO World day for Audiovisual archives is a great achievement and is the result of many years of lobbying at an international level by those who are concerned about the appreciation and survival of our world audiovisual heritage. Each year the day provides an international rallying point for archives across the world to celebrate and recognize the value of these archives to future generations.

The theme for 2009 is "Fading Heritage – We can Save it!"

The evening will include:

  • Event introduced by Karena Smith, BAFTA Archive Consultant
  • UNESCO message
  • An Academic perspective of Audio visual Archives and Restoration Professor John Ellis (Department of Media Arts, Royal Holloway, University of London)
  • Case Study – Restoration of the Red Shoes – Fiona Maxwell (ITV Global Entertainment) takes us through the restoration of the Michael Powell classic.
