JOHN HUNTLEY Mourned

More than a hundred friends, family
and colleagues gathered at BAFTA on
August 28th to share memories and
pay tribute to John Huntley who sadly
died early in August at the age of
82.
It was an informal reception allowing
those who shared John's passion for
film and transport history to mingle
with those who had met him through
work and enjoyed his jovial, gentlemanly
nature, his story telling and endless
knowledge.
Those who stayed on were treated to
the showing of a 1966 documentary
"It Began in Brighton" directed
by Tristram Powell and produced by
Melvyn Bragg. It included John Huntley
in his prime, enthusiastically presenting
a fascinating study of Brighton's
early film pioneers (1896-1902), including
G A Smith and Esme Collins. A true
gem!
Our thoughts go out to Amanda Huntley
and her sister Suzi who feel his loss
so deeply.
(The next issue of ARCHIVE ZONES will
feature a personal tribute from archive
researcher, Tony Dalton)
