FOCAL ANNOUNCES SHORTLIST FOR 2013 FOOTAGE AWARDS

FOCAL International announces the shortlist for its annual footage industry awards, celebrating achievement in the use of stock and archival footage across 18 production categories. Paul Sargent, former Head Curator of the Imperial War Museum, will receive FOCAL International’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Tickets for the Awards, hosted by television history presenter Dan Snow, to be presented in association with AP Archive on 2nd May 2013, are now available.

London, UK – 4th March 2013 – FOCAL International announced today the shortlist of nominations for the tenth annual FOCAL International Awards in association with AP Archive. The Awards honour producers, filmmakers and other creative professionals who have used library footage in a documentary, feature film or any other form of production. The FOCAL International Awards, hosted by television history presenter Dan Snow, will be presented in association with AP Archive on the evening of the 2nd May 2013 at a glittering award ceremony at the Lancaster London Hotel. From the Rolling Stones' unparalleled rock and roll journey, to the frenzied rise of the British dance club scene, to the tragedy of the Central Park Five, the films nominated for this year’s FOCAL International Awards showcase a dazzling array of production styles, subject matter, storytelling prowess and, of course, masterful integration of outstanding stock and archival footage.

FOCAL International received a record-setting 224 submissions for its FOCAL International Awards, so “the various juries have had an agonising time deciding on their shortlist of three in each category,” said Julie Lewis, organizer of the awards and FOCAL International’s General Manager. In all, 10 countries are represented in the final nominations, with USA getting 13 nominations, including two from American Experience, and totally dominating the category Best use of Footage in a Production Featuring Music category, usually the preserve of the BBC Music Entertainment department. “Our shortlist represents some of the most exciting films made last year,” said Jerry Kuehl, lead juror, “wherein the narrative impact of stock and archival footage is vital to the success of the production. Our judges have really had a tough time this year but when you end up with both Crossfire Hurricane and Under African Skies, for example in one category, on two of the biggest names in rock music, the Rolling Stones and Paul Simon - it’ll be an interesting night!”

Paul Sargent, former Head Curator of the Imperial War Museum, will receive FOCAL International’s Lifetime Achievement Award. For more than 30 years, Sargent has played a significant role in the British content industry, leading the commercial access team of the Imperial War Museums Film Archive. In his work at the IWM, he promoted the commercial use of the Film Archive collection, skilfully balancing the requirements of commercial users with both needs of film preservation and the wider priorities of the museum. Paul also served on the FOCAL International Executive for many years and initiated significant training programmes. Paul retired from the Imperial War Museum in 2012.

The Awards evening includes a drinks reception, three course meal and after party. In addition to awards recognizing achievement in a wide variety of production categories, awards for restorations of the world’s film and video archive heritage are also up for grabs, as are commendations for the skilled researchers, archivists, libraries. Conference, supported by the British Film Institute (BFI) which is to be held earlier in the day of 2nd May, Grover Crisp, Sony Pictures EVP will receive a new award for ‘Outstanding Achievement in the Field of Film Restoration and Preservation’.
