Framepool, the footage collection run by filmmakers, opens their call for entries for the 2011 Framepool/ LBB/ FireFlies Challenge. This successful short-film competition is aimed at directors from all over the world, who want to present their films to a highly prominent jury – whilst supporting a good cause at the same time. Contestants are asked to craft a short movie on the topic “compassion”.
The works will be judged by a jury of advertising industry super stars, including Mark Tutsell (Leo Burnett), Jake Scott (RSA), Olivier Altman (Publicis), Steffen Gentis (BBDO Proximity), Ringan Ledwidge (Rattling Stick), Mike Clear (2010 Winner/Mother), Wolf Jaiser and Sandy Watson Scott (The FireFlies). The call for entries opens now and the deadline is May 11th 2011. The winners will be honoured during the Cannes Lions Festival on June 23rd 2011.
Initiated by Framepool and the advertising community website LBBOnline, the Framepool/ LBB/ FireFlies Challenge is dedicated to the FireFlies organisation. The FireFlies are committed to raising awareness and money for the fight against Leukaemia. Each year amateur cyclists from the ranks of the advertising and film world participate in the “FireFlies Tour” and cycle across the Alps from Geneva to Cannes – inspired by the courage it takes to fight Cancer but as well by compassion and the will to contribute to this fight.
Filmmakers from all over the world can now help increase awareness for FireFlies and raise their own profiles at the same time: The Framepool/ LBB/ FireFlies Challenge is free to enter and a great showcase for directors and their teams. The ten best films will be presented to a broad international audience during Cannes Lions. Additionally, the filmmakers profit from numerous communication activities, screenings and the distribution of DVDs across the world– this will guarantee the maximum awareness of their work.
Contestants are asked to craft a beautiful piece of work, 30” to 3 minutes long, showing their take on the meaning of the word ‘compassion’ in its widest form. Compassion is essential for human life. It can take root in the horror of battle or the life-affirming halls of a maternity ward. It can see humour in failure and humility in success. All aspects relating to this deeply human emotion are interesting for this competition.

The competition can be entered by a single person or a team; contestants can use as much talent as is needed – teamwork is encouraged! As flexible as the topic is the way how it can be visualized: The only necessary condition is the work with footage material – Framepool allows the use of their stock footage library free of charge for the challenge.
So contestants can shoot, animate, adapt or add the rest in post production. Only, 20% of the film must feature stock footage. The submissions should be minimum 30 seconds up to a maximum of three minutes.

The FireFlies Tour was established in 2001 by Sandy Watson Scott (then Head of TV, M&C Saatchi) in recognition of relatives and friends’ battles with cancer. The five cofounders: Jake Scott, Adrian Moat, Nick Livesey (all Directors at RSA Films), Tim Page (Head of TV at Y&R) and Chris Haworth (Ski Instructor) set out to cycle 1,000 km, 18 mountains in just 8 days from Lake Evian across the Alps to Cannes, arriving during the Cannes Lions Advertising Festival.
Inspired by the courage it takes to fight cancer the riders annually tackle the most gruelling climbs of Le Tour de France. Their motto is simple: “for those who suffer we ride”. The FireFlies are committed to raising money for LEUKA, a charity formed to support Research & Treatment of Leukaemia at the Hammersmith Hospital, London, renowned as a world leader in the treatment of cancers of the blood. Each year new amateur cyclists from the ranks of the advertising and film world have taken up the challenge. 2010 marked the 10th anniversary of the tour – and thanks to industry sponsors, the FireFlies smashed their target to raise £1.000,000 in aid of LEUKA to date.
Little Black Book began as a series of city guides covering major advertising centres and aimed at the global advertising community.
