TARA launch - 50 Years of ABC Footage Now Searchable Online

1 April 2006

The ABC is pleased to announce the launch of TARA Online, an online database providing content users access to thousands of hours of footage recorded over the past 50 years by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC).

The database contains over 400,000 records of selected ABC-produced TV programs, segments and stock footage, plus some material produced by outside sources.

TARA contains records on genres such as news and current affairs, science, music, sport and the arts, and is sourced from productions dating from 1956, when television was introduced in Australia. Also included are records relating to a selection of other items donated to the ABC plus records of National Geographic and APTN (Associated Press Television news) material that is held in Australia.

With weekly updates today's TARA covers an amazingly complex and varied collection of footage that can be searched at any time, anywhere. Comprehensive and easy to use, TARA also includes search tips, plus answers to frequently asked questions. Not all footage records are accessible in TARA and content users can choose to seek the services of the ABC’s expert researchers to perform a wider search of the online and inhouse specialist databases.
Head ABC Content Services, Mary Jane Stannus said, “The ABC's Archive contains the nation's most significant and historic audiovisual media collection, and the fact that it is now easily accessible to the production industry is extremely satisfying.”
Manager Product and Content Sales, Augustus Dulgaro, said, “We are pleased to offer this online footage-search service which will assist producers and researchers to find that all-important shot for their next production.”
