1000 - 1700 An introduction to Film & Video Technology

 

 

 

David Walsh, Head of Preservation

Paul Sargent, Deputy Keeper Film and Video Archive

Schedule - Lunch included

  • Introduction to moving images – a historical overview
  • Nature of film – composition, format, how it works
  • History of film technology
  • Types of film – negatives, positives, soundtracks, colour etc
  • The film production process – shooting, cutting, post-production, release etc
  • Principles of video
  • History of video and electronic formats
  • Production using video
  • Identifying film and video in a collection
  • Managing film and video in the archive – masters, duplication etc
  • Repair and restoration
  • Ethical questions – colour, speed, sound, grain, versions etc
  • Access to archive material – the digital future

 

 

All the above will include hands-on practical experience giving students the opportunity to see and handle the different types of film and tape and associated equipment.

Tour the BBC Information BBC Motion Gallery Welcome and introduction by Natalie Dewar. Talk on cataloguing and how the BBC system is used, together with the metadata requirements.

BBC Motion Gallery Welcome by Mark Fricker. Example of the work flow - from receiving the footage request, researching the catalogue, clearing the rights and all aspects to delivery.

Producer's Perspective - An Archive Producer will give an overview on making a documentary which includes footage, from concept to transmission through funding, research, licensing, technical transfers to delivery.

1530 - 1600 Screening of a FOCAL International Award winning documentary

The cost of the course is £850 + VAT (early bird rate of £750 + VAT applies on all bookings made before 1st March 2009). It includes seminars, lunches, some transport between training venues, plus the networking and social event. Accommodation NOT included.
