As a direct result of last summer's first Footage Fair, where footage library members promoted themselves to researchers and producers in a number of short presentations, FOCAL became aware that a number of its members offering facilities to the libraries themselves were interested in a similar opportunity to present their services.
With the pace of technological change outstripping the ability of many library staff to keep up with the various ways that it is now possible to assist in the exploitation of their valuable content resource, it was decided to combine the Footage Technical Fair with some basic training.
The six participating companies, Arkemedia, Moving Image Research, Savvis, Snell & Wilcox, TMR Digital Services (the new name for the combined services of The Machine Room and Clipstream), plus TC Soho all rose to the challenge of updating the audience of library managers, sales personnel and archivists to all that's new in the way of digital facilities - in 10 minute presentations!
Services such as film and video restoration, transfers, duplication and conversions, digital asset management, encoding and streaming etc, were all covered at break-neck speed, so that when, after a short refreshment break, it was possible to begin the real business of the day – the networking, the participants and delegates were only too happy to sit down and enjoy leisurely, in-depth one to one Q&A sessions with each other. As a consequence, what had been billed as “scheduled 10-minute speed dating sessions” gave way to quality meetings in the relaxed environment of The London TV Centre's 18th Floor. With its spectacular panoramic views over London, food and refreshments on tap, the venue helped to create a most informative and valuable networking experience.
