BBC Motion Gallery, the footage licensing arm of BBC Worldwide and the exclusive global representative for the CBS News Archive, has provided a range of clips for use in the forthcoming drama Bobby, written and directed by Emilio Estevez. Bobby revisits the night Robert F. Kennedy was gunned down at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. With an incredible ensemble cast, the film follows 22 individuals who are all at the hotel for different purposes but share the common thread of anticipating Kennedy’s arrival at the primary election night party. This historic night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country at the time, including racism, sexual inequality and class differences. Bobby is a Weinstein Company presentation of a Bold Films production being released in limited theaters in the U.S. by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios Inc. (MGM) on November 17th and nationwide on November 23rd.
No actor was cast to play Kennedy, however. Instead, the filmmakers chose to use archival footage, much of it sourced from the CBS News Archive, to capture the Kennedy “mystique” and provide the necessary authenticity for the film. This material included Kennedy’s entire victory speech, campaign footage and speeches given from the Ambassador Hotel.
Filmmakers also sourced newsreel clips from the CBS News Archive to show the day unfolding as reported by the CBS anchors. Additional footage included bombs falling in Vietnam and the Cesar Chavez protests, which all served to provide historical context to the movie. All told, an estimated 85 percent of the stock footage in the film was sourced from the CBS News Archives.
“I’ve worked with BBC Motion Gallery on many projects over the years. The content in the collections is great but they also understand the demands and time constraints of the moviemaking process,” said Deborah Ricketts, an independent Footage Researcher who worked on the film. “BBC Motion Gallery has taken great care of this movie. We had to get back to the original elements for most of the footage, and my reps worked tirelessly to locate these clips, get them to the lab, and kept me and the production informed during every step of the process. I don't know of another archive that would have gone to the lengths that BBC Motion Gallery did for this project. I couldn't be more pleased with the service and the footage provided.”
Jan Ross, Senior Vice President, BBC Motion Gallery stated, “The BBC and CBS archives have become huge resources for both documentary filmmakers and directors wanting to tell a historical story. We’re honored to be a part of this riveting tale, which is already garnering pre-Oscar buzz for Estevez.”
The ensemble cast portraying fictionalized characters from a cross-section of America, features Harry Belafonte, Joy Bryant, Nick Cannon, Emilio Estevez, Laurence Fishburne, Brian Geraghty, Heather Graham, Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, David Krumholtz, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, Lindsay Lohan, William H. Macy, Svetlana Metkina, Demi Moore, Freddy Rodriguez, Martin Sheen, Christian Slater, Sharon Stone, Jacob Vargas, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Elijah Wood.
BBC Motion Gallery has also recently licensed footage for use in a range of feature film and documentary projects, including: When The Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, Jarhead, The U.S. vs John Lennon, Good Night, and Good Luck, Hoot, The Day After Tomorrow and The Hunting of the President.
