1 November 2006

News in brief:

Motorsport: Engine failure after 36 laps effectively ended Schumacher’s Chinese Grand Prix title challenge. He retires a seven-time World Champion. Renault won the Constructor Championship with 206 points, 5 more than Ferrari who came second.

Rugby League: St Helens completed a clean sweep in 2006 as they defeated Hull 26-4 in the Engage Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford. Earlier this season they won the Powergen Challenge Cup and the league winners shield.

Tennis: Roger Federer won both the ATP Madrid Masters and the Davidoff Swiss Indoors this past month. Each victory was played against Chile's Fernando Gonzalez and when completed gave Federer an impressive 10th and 11th tournament victory of the year.

Fast Fact!

Golf: Statisticians say the odds of making a hole in one are 1 in 13,000. Andrew Butterfield’s 203 yrd ace on the 18th hole of the European Tour Mallorca Classic in October not only beat those odds, but won the Englishman a brand new Hyundai Sante Fe car.

Did you know…

Snooker: On the 9th of October the world of snooker lost an admirable player when Paul Hunter sadly passed away. His notable career includes being the youngest ever player to reach the final of a major ranking event, as well as being the 2nd youngest player to ever win a major professional event (at the 1996 and 1998 Regal Welsh Open respectively).
In November…

Tennis: The season ending Masters Cup takes place in Shanghai next month with only four places remaining. Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Ivan Ljubicic, Nikolay Davydenko and Andy Roddick have all qualified for this prestigious tournament beginning 12th November.

Golf: The year’s Tour Championship takes place at East Lake Country Club, Georgia. For many of this year’s victorious European Ryder Cup team this will be the first time back on American soil since their exciting win.

Candian Football League (CFL): This year’s Grey cup takes place on 19th of November in the Canadian city of Winnipeg. Current standings suggest Toronto or Montreal will be playing British Columbia or Calgary, though the definitive competitors will be decided later in the month.
