Tennis: Rafael Nadal delighted his home crowd at the Madrid ATP Masters Series event by beating Ivan Ljubicic in a 5 set thriller. Despite losing the first two sets, Nadal regained his composure to clinch the title by winning 7-3 in the final set tie-break.
Golf: Tiger Woods won the WGC American Express Championship for the fourth time in exciting fashion. Tied with John Daly on 10 under par after the final round, a costly miscue by Daly on the second play-off hole gave Woods his sixth PGA Tour event victory of the season and a winners cheque for $1.3 million.

Soccer: Holland extended their unbeaten sequence under coach Marco Van Basten to 16 games following a win and a draw in their final World Cup qualifiers, a run that has seen them rise to second in the latest FIFA World Rankings.

Did you know…
· Horse Racing: Jockey Kieron Fallon won his first Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe, riding on Hurricane Run. The 11-4 favourite finished 4 lengths clear of Westerner with last years winner Bago coming in third.
· Dancesport: The Italian pairing of Ricardo Cocchi and Joanne Wilkinson became the 2005 IDSF World Latin Champions. The competition was held at Ostrava in the Czech Republic.
· Soccer: After finishing 4th in their qualifying group, Greece became the third defending European Champions to fail to qualify for the subsequent World Cup. Denmark, the 1992 champions, and the former Czechoslovakia, winners in 1976, were the others.

In November…
· Tennis: Both the Men’s and Women’s professional Tennis seasons draw to a close with their respective Tour Championship finales: the Tennis Masters Cup, in Shanghai, and the WTA Tour Championships, in Los Angeles. The top 8 ranked players from both Tours will compete in the competitions which in 2004 saw Roger Federer and Maria Sharapova, that year’s Wimbledon champions, win the titles. · Athletics: In endurance events, the annual ING New York City Marathon and Ironman Western Australia take place on the first and last Sundays of the month respectively.
