British Movietonews Finds an Australian Home

1 October 2005

British Movietone, one of the world’s largest collections of cinema newsreel has appointed Australian film library “Absolutely Wild Visuals”(AWV) as its exclusive Australian agent.

British Movietone’s well preserved newsreel library is considered a veritable history book covering the period from 1929 to 1979. The library also has selected coverage from the turn of the century to 1929 and a selection of unique feature film outtakes, particularly suitable for historical programming.

British Movietone is the only newsreel archive that has meticulously transferred its nitrate newsreels to safety film, and then digitally mastered, thereby offering filmmakers the finest quality material for their production needs.

The appointment of local agent AWV will enable Australian film and TV producers to have direct access to over 48,000 newsreel stories covering over 50 years of world history, including a wealth of Australian content. This footage is also completely available for on-line viewing and research.

A large selection of British Movietone sub-masters are now held in Absolutely Wild Visuals Sydney office to ensure Australian clients have faster access to material and without costly international courier fees.

“We are delighted to be able to better serve the needs of our Australian clients” says Barry Florin, Managing Director of British Movietonews Ltd.

“In today’s world of the mega-archive where many collections include hundreds of thousands of hours of material, British Movietonews, through Absolutely Wild Visuals offers a combination of cutting edge technology backed by a locally based Agent offering personalised service. It’s the best of both worlds”.

“This relationship could not have come at a more opportune time” says AWV Managing Director Tina Dalton.

“History programming has had a resurgence of popularity of late; this is set to continue with the Australian Government announcement that Film Australia will receive an additional $7.5 million over three years to produce high-quality documentaries on Australia's history.

We are therefore delighted to be able to provide local producers access to this high quality history collection in a very user friendly format. British Movietone’s online database with preview clips allow producers and researchers to explore the collection at their own convenience”.

The AWV film library comprises a total collection of more than 1 million shots captured by some of the world’s best independent filmmakers from around the world including the world-renowned UK based Survival and Oxford Scientific (OSF) collections.
