This month, the biggest names in women’s tennis compete in the WTA Tour Championships in Los Angeles. Lindsay Davenport, currently leading the WTA rankings will be desperate to hold off the Russian challenge consisting of Elena Dementieva, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Anastasia Myskina and Maria Sharapova, all of whom will be attempting to claim Kim Clijsters title. Continuing with female tennis, the Fed Cup will be contested by the end of the month with the semi finals and finals both being held in Moscow. In the semi finals the Russian team are up against Austria, whilst Spain meet the defending champions, France. In the men’s game, the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston will see the current world number one Roger Federer attempt to defend his title. All in all a great month of Tennis ahead!
When the New York City Marathon began in 1970, it only had 55 finishers – 23 years later that number had catapulted to a record 34,729 finishers! Paula Radcliffe is among the 35,000 athletes taking part in the New York City Marathon this month. It is a much anticipated comeback for the athlete after an unsuccessful Olympic Games, where she failed to finish both the Marathon and the 10,000m. The 2003 Mens race was dominated by Kenya, achieving a perfect 1,2,3. Can the American favourite Meb Keflezighi beat the Kenyans and achieve a win on home soil this month?
Did you know…
