Toronto, April 23, 2008 – The National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is launching a new Web destination for stock footage professionals: NFB IMAGES www.nfb.ca/images
The site will be launched as part of an avant-premiere industry event open to Hot Doc delegates and members of the Canadian filmmaking industry on April 23, 2008 – and will be available online on April 24.
“The NFB collection is Canada’s national audiovisual treasure,” said Tom Perlmutter, Government Film Commissioner and NFB chairperson. “As Canada’s public producer and distributor, and a leader in digital content, we’re committed to using the latest technologies to increase access to this world-class resource. NFB IMAGES is a major step forward in the NFB’s digital strategy.”
NFB IMAGES is a unique state-of-the art Web site that will allow researchers, producers, directors and editors from around the world unprecedented access to stock footage, giving them the ability to view, edit and share online. What’s more, advanced research tools make finding the shots easier than ever, with free downloads for immediate offline editing. Backing all this up is a bilingual team of stock footage experts to help filmmakers meet tight deadlines, providing superb research assistance and rights clearance support.
The NFB’s storied history in audiovisual excellence goes back 70 years. But NFB IMAGES goes back even further, offering a century’s worth of historical footage – rare images of yesteryear, matched by a wealth of contemporary footage.
When NFB IMAGES launches on April 24, 2008, 20% of the NFB stock footage collection will be available to screen online – with thousands more hours available via text-based search. The NFB is in the process of digitizing its entire stock footage collection – including hundreds of hours of high-definition material – so that all footage will soon be available to preview, edit and share, all online.
This new Web site is the latest chapter in the NFB’s growing international presence in high-quality film and video archives. The NFB represents the world-renowned National Geographic and Gaumont-Pathé archives in Canada, and offers stunning new material shot in high definition, including superb footage from independent productions such as Shining Mountains, a majestic look at the Rocky Mountains, and Arctic Mission, a voyage into the changing face of the North.
